A great speaker at this low price,
By Mr homeowner (Fremont, CA) - See all my reviews

The one reviewer who rated them one star WITHOUT LISTENING TO THEM should be ignored. I have two pair of theses speakers installed in rear walls and side walls for 7.1 system and they work fine. I had someone over last weekend and I had to point the speakers out for him, he had never noticed them before [he had been in the house 6 to 8 times before]. I turned the speakers off and went to stereo and then he noticed them right away! I am very happy with them and and the "disappear" when the speaker grilles are painted wall color. That was the idea when I got them. A pair of three way, in the wall, eight inch woofer speakers for $80 to $90 is a GREAT deal. I may now put three of them in the front as main and center speakers cause the wife does not like the large speakers I am using there now. I am running these speakers with Audiosource's "low boy" subwoofer which is also a fine speaker and works very well.

AudioSource AS8S Speaker Review,

Good value for speakers of this quality. Ordred 3 pairs of speakers of which one speaker of one of the pair had distortion. All of the other speakers sound great. Called Audio Source tech support to obtain an in-warranty replacement without any hassles. Did take Audio Source 1 1/2 months to send me a replacement (only after I called and reminded them). Replacement speaker works fine.

AS8S - Good Speakers But Dont Pay too Much,
By
This review is from: AudioSource AS8S Eight-inch Full Range In-Wall Speakers (Pair) (Electronics)
First off, let me say I have owned and installed a lot of Audiosource Equipment, including amps and in wall speakers. My other review is for Audiosource IW-8S speakers, an in-wall, 3-way, gem of a speaker - I installed 8 pair of them in my condo in Chicago.
Having moved into new construction, I again went to the Audiosource well, wanting more IW-8S speakers, and found a wholesaler with 4 pairs to sell at $30 a pair. You can get the AS8S speakers anywhere for around $30-$40 a pair, so listing for $169 make me laugh out loud. On with my story. What was delivered were not 3-way IW-8S speakers, but 2-way AS8S speakers. I called the seller, who never opened the shipping cartons to inspect what she was selling, so it was an honest mistake, and she said I could return these speakers. For $30 a pair, returning them was more trouble then it was worth so I decided to keep them. I have installed some, and will share my perceptions of these speakers with you. For $30 a pair, I find their power handling ability very good, and the frequency response is also quite good, but you do need a sbubwoofer! On performance, I am a little disappointed they do not match the 3-way IW-8S speakers, but they are in my basement for the most part, so they function well enough. My gripe about these speakers? The installation process. I mentioned above, I've installed 8 pair of Audiosource speakers, which came with the dog-ear dry wall locks, that for normal people make installation fairly simple (if you exclude cutting drywall holes, running cables and trips to the Emergency Room). You'll have none of that with the AS8S, as they use an arcane bracket system which I scrapped and created my own template and mounting hardware to secure the speakers properly. The bracket system with these speakers is junk, but again, at $30 a pair, and a little effort, I devised a better system with some concrete bolts and wood-framing what works much better and provides more support for the speaker. Dont buy these speakers unless you want to spend considerable time getting the install right. They sound very good, but if I paid $169 a pair, they would have been returned with one look in the box. For me, and for what I paid, they function quite well, and will rock my basement when used in stereo mode, which makes me happy. They were a good deal for the price I paid.

Great for the average homeowner,

I would not consider myself to be an audiophile, but I do care about how my music and DVDs sound. I have had these speakers for several years now and I have absolutely no complaints. They sound great today as they did upon installation. They might not satisfy audiophiles (but then nothing does), but I expect that most folks will be highly satisfied.
The in-wall nature of the speakers was just what we were looking for. After having had some big old beasts that sounded great but took up lots of floor space and then taking a look at some smaller speakers that still required us to find space for them, these speakers were just what the doctor ordered. We have not even painted the grills (what if we repaint the room another color?), but we think that the speakers look great as they are. Enjoy.

These speakers sound great. Currently, we are just using them for our
stereo but I will connect them to our surround sound for our TV. The speakers were easy to install and blend in with the wall. The sound is very good compared to other speakers costing twice as much.

I purchased these speakers three years ago to be placed in my ceiling as rear surround sound speakers. They were hooked up to a Denon 2805 receiver then I upgraded to a Denon 2809. These speakers still sound strong and I've had no problems with them. If you can find them at another retailer, jump on them. They are well worth it.
My entire speaker setup is from Audio Source and they sound great. People that hear my surround sound system don't believe what I paid for the setup. Big name brands are big because they have Brand Recognition not because they sound better than others. Certainly, some expensive speakers are worth it but not all of them. Regards CP

The listing is slightly misleading...,
This review is from: AudioSource AS8S Eight-inch Full Range In-Wall Speakers (Pair) (Electronics)
There are a lot of conflicting specs for these speakers. That includes within the packaging as it comes from the mfr...
I thought from what I read that I was buying a 3-way speaker with 200w power handling capacity and a frequency respons of 28-20k Hz. It did seem a little too good to be true for the price, but hey - hope springs eternal... When I got the speakers I was a little saddened to see that the back has them as 2-way. It took me a while to work out they are referring to the bass driver, which has a 2" midrange coaxially mounted. The specs in the insert sheet that came with the speakers has the speakers running 40-20kHz. Not quite the same, but I guess not awful. I have a big sub, so it's not that much of an issue. It would have been nice to have known about it before buying them though. The thing that saddened me the most was the power handling capacity. I have seen listings that rate them from 100W to 200W. To be fair it is 100W on the Amazon site. What it doesn't say is that that is 100W peak. The sensitivity is decent so hopefully they can generate adequate SPLs. I must say that I haven't listened to them yet and to be fair they are extremely inexpensive for speaker pairs. They might be the best thing ever, but they aren't exactly as advertised that's for sure. When I get them in the walls I'll update this review if Amazon allows it. |
