Book Description

October 6, 1997
Hey.  Hey, you.  Yeah, you.  The one looking at the computer screen.  I'm so glad you're reading about this.  I wrote it and read it so you'd listen to it.

Now, here's where I'm supposed to say all kinds of hip, Whoopi-esque stuff to get you to buy this.  Reading about this is just the first step.  Buying it--that's a whole other contract.  So this is when we seal the deal, when I tell you, in my own inimitable way, how uproarious and provocative this audiobook is, how out there, uncensored, cutting edge and whatever else I can think to throw into the mix.

Or, I could say things like, "Not since War and Peace. . . " or "Move over, Alice Walker. . . " or "This audiobook does for the spoken word what Pat Boone did for heavy metal. . . "  Well, come on now.  Let's face it, if this audiobook were all those things it'd be a novel, and I wouldn't resort to such low tactics.  You'd just buy it and go home, or wait for someone to turn it into a movie.  So I'll give it to you straight.  This audiobook doesn't suck.

It'll make you laugh--maybe not out loud, but in that place deep down where you know a good joke when you hear one.  It'll make you think--also not out loud, because, you know, that'd be a little strange.  It may shock you.  Hell, it might even get you to reconsider a few things, and consider a few others for the first time.

You can take this audiobook to bed, or to the beach, and it won't ask you to swallow, or rub lotion on its back.  It doesn't cost a whole lot of money.  And (best of all!) it's collectible.  Buy a few--one to listen to and a couple more to set aside for your retirement, 'cause these suckers are gonna go up in value like nobody's business.  Trust me on this.  One to listen to, and a couple more to set aside.  You won't be sorry.

And neither will I.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sex, religion, politics, men's bathroom habits?no topic is sacred in this witty and brutally honest collection of unrelated pieces by veteran comic Goldberg (Book, Rob Weisbach: Morrow, 1997). At times, this is much like a stale stand-up comedy routine poking fun at the usual topics like driving habits and bodily functions. However, there is another dimension to Goldberg's keen wit and eloquent delivery that makes this a thought-provoking and multilayered monolog. Goldberg's relaxed, conversational tone, peppered with much colorful (and, for some listeners, objectionable) language keeps the listener entranced as she becomes, in turn, reflective, angry, and nostalgic?but, above all, always surprising and very, very funny. Though the book received almost universally negative reviews, hearing Goldberg read her material makes it a totally different experience. The language will limit this to open-minded adult audiences. ?Susan McCaffrey, Sturgis H.S. Lib., Mich.

5.0 out of 5 stars It'll make you feel good., January 12, 2000

I must say that after I listened to her tapes I wanted to telephone her to say I would love to meet you. I laughed so hard that I had to cross my legs. This happens to us sometimes when we had a few children and get into our forties. She has a good view on mother hood and indiviual freedom of choices. She is family oriented. It was wonderful

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a Pleasant Evening at Your Place, August 30, 1999

There are lots of "stars" out there, and as much as I like viewing many of them, there's only a few that are just so cool that I'd like to hang out with them. Paul McCartney, Lee Trevino - people who you KNOW could just talk about anything and you'd be fascinated.

For me, Whoopi is one such person, and I'm thrilled that this audiotape let me have such a "visit" from such an entrancing figure. By the end, I felt as though she had spent a Thanksgiving weekend, just hanging out, talking about whatever, in a most engaging fashion. She may not make the trip, but I feel like I got to know her. Cool!

3.0 out of 5 stars An inside view of Whoopi..., June 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Audiobook (Audio Cassette)
I was expecting a more classical Whoopi but what I found was an interesting surprise. It provided an insight to Whoopi that I had not thought about nor heard before. It is not for everyone. In fact if you are looking for something light and in the line of Whoopi's usual...skip this one. It made me stop and think about some parts of my life I had put in the back of my mind. But she tells you on the tape that part of the purpose of this book is to get you to stop and think.
