5.0 out of 5 stars Great for work!
I bought the Advent 770 after going to Best Buy and trying on the various models they had there. I found this model to be the most comfortable at the store so I bought them from Amazon. I wear them at work for hours at a time and even though I wear glasses, I am always comfortable. Other headphones I have worn compress my ears too much--but this set does not. (A did not...

These headphones are a decent wirless solution but are a tale of two realities.

Reality 1 - When charged and properly tuned, they sound great; rich bass and full mid range with good highs. Their range is excellent - I have listened to music for 3-4 hours about 100 feet from the base. They are adjustable and accomodate different size heads easily.

Reality 2 - The challenge of keeping them tuned and charged is not always easily accomplished. The battery setup and charging arrangement could have been done significantly better. Also unless you want to be adjusting the levels alot you need a fixed level signal. Additionally since the frequency reception is quite contingent upon battery strength, if you don't have the time or means to keep the battery charged to certain levels your performance suffers.

Since I am a bit of a techno geek being mindful of charging and frequency adjustment is not a big deal, but others (like my wife) will find it a hassle.

(A did not like a Sony wireless headphone for that reason.)

There is some adjustment of the controls (to match the frequency of the base and the headphones) needed, but it does not bother me. It is very similar to changing channels on a cordless phone, only it is an analog dial.

I am very happy with the product and I am considering buying a second pair for home use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds fairly good, lightweight, not bad., October 26, 1999

Simple to install, and sounds fairly good. Range is adequate for my modest tract home & yard (which never takes me more than 200 feet from the base.) I sometimes get a little static when I sit back in the easy chair (metal springs?) I was used to a heavier closed headset, so I was pleased with the lighter weight of this closed headphone.

I was mostly interested in isolation from unwanted background noise while watching TV or listening to CDs. The closed earpieces provide just acceptable isolation from outside noise.

The built-in nicad recharger is a little slow (needs 12+ hours to lay in a full charge), but assuming you only need them 6 hours a day, it should suffice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good balance of price, performance and features, August 23, 1999

I went from a pair of Sony Studio headphones MDR-V6, which recently bit the dust, to these Advent AW770 wireless headphones. Considering that the price for each was roughly $100, I expected to lose some quality and performance to gain wireless flexibility. As far as the sound quality goes, they definitely do not match the range and clarity of the Sony headphones, but I would consider it better than average. It is an acceptable trade off, a little bit lesser sound quality, for the ability to walk around the house with your headphones on. The manual claims that they work up to 300 feet away (the length of a football field). In actuality, it was more like 75 feet though a few walls. I could easily walk all around my townhouse & about 20 feet outside before they started to get a bit fuzzy. All in all, I would consider these to be a good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid product at an attractive price, May 3, 2002

This review is from: Audiovox Advent AW770 Wireless Headphones (Silver) (Electronics)
My primary motivation for purchasing wireless headphones was to permit me to listen to music or television programming while on my exercise bike at home. Because acoustic isolation was desirable, I preferred a closed cup headphone design that would block much ambient sound. I have been quite pleased with the Advent AW770 headphones. They do, indeed, isolate me from most ambient noise, which is ideal for listening to music or television while exercising--without having to turn the volume up to ear-splitting levels. (Of course, this is highly undesirable if you need to be able to easily hear a baby crying from a distant room in your home.)

My stereo and exercise bike are in my finished basement, and I get acceptable audio quality throughout my house, in spite of having the transmitter below ground level. While the range and audio quality are good, the headphones do crackle from varying signal strength and interference as I walk across the house. There is also a very noticeable--but not unbearable--amount of background hiss from the built-in amplifier. If you listen to pop music, most country, blues, or classic rock, the hiss will not be noticeable most of the time; however, you may find it distracting if you are a classical music fan, as the hiss becomes more conspicuous during quiet passages.

I have been perfectly satisfied with the overall sound quality of the headphones. I ended up choosing to use a monitor output on my stereo receiver, since I found no need to alter the signal (e.g., add bass or otherwise tweak the frequency response). Using a fixed-level audio output is desirable, since you must calibrate the transmitter for the audio source's output level for maximum performace and to avoid distorted sound. This becomes much more difficult if the phones are connected to a TV or stereo headphone jack, which puts out varying amounts of signal. Lest you worry, the product includes nearly every conceivable connector and adaptor cable one could possibly need for virtually any hook-up scenario.

Finally, I have been impressed with battery life. The included rechargeables last 5-6 hours. I know this not from exercising in my basement for 6 hours at a time; rather, I have enjoyed having the headphones and their good sound quality so much that I have been wearing them when I study. Since my exams are this week and the next, I've spent many hours with them clamped over my head!

1.0 out of 5 stars Limited range with poor sound quality, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Audiovox Advent AW770 Wireless Headphones (Silver) (Electronics)
The sound quality of these headphones was relatively poor but that is not why I returned them. The range was about 25 feet on the same floor and then loud static would come and go at different locations in the house. This was very consistent. In the basement they were useless. I replace them with a set by RCA model wph150 for $30 less and the sound was much better and no problem anywhere in the house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent headphones for the money, February 11, 2001

I use these headphones when watching DVD and VHS movies at odd times so not to wake up neighbors. The sound quality is quite good - sometimes surprising - considering the inexpensive nature of the product.

The unit is easily set up - batteries need to be charged before initial use and after about every six hours of use thereafter. The unit requires a bit of patience to be "tuned in" and the signal varies as batteries wear down. Oddly enough the volume control was placed next to the tuning control, which is annoying until you get used to it.

I do not like to be restricted by headphones with wires, so I accept the shortcomings of wireless headphones. Compared to other wireless headphones in the same price range the Advents have a richer, fuller sound and are arguably better constructed. If you are thinking about wireless the AW 770 are a decent choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars don't give up without fiddling!, August 15, 2002
This review is from: Audiovox Advent AW770 Wireless Headphones (Silver) (Electronics)
this is actually a really nice set of wireless headphones! I didn't think so until i read someone's review here! The key is in three things if you don't want any hiss and/or high frequency buzz.
1. as noted elsewhere (thanks) plug it into line out not speakers - the lineout is supposedly a more powerful output (thus needs less amplification and thus less buzz and hiss)
2. turn up your stereo/computer/etc. quite loud - this way the Advent unit does not have to amplify much (and thus less squeel)
3. turn the volume on the headset down considerably. if this is turned up too much it causes hiss and squeel - thats bad! Instead turn up the volume a tiny bit on the base unit (transmitter)'s amplification (but don't turn up too much!)

in a nutshell - try to get a strong signal input in the transmitter and then use very little amplification on the headphones and transmitter!

i enjoy classical music with this without much annoying background hiss/buzz/squeel! now it's not perfect, but i like it alot.

enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars decent, but not outstanding, July 25, 2001

I can't complain about the cost, I actually won these, so mine were free.

These headphones provide hours of wireless listening throughout your house and even the surrounding outdoors. The sound quality is ok, the low is good, the midrange is ok, but the high just sucks. With some EQ adjustment they sound better but they always seem to have too low of a tone for my taste. They completely cover the ears and block most outside sound which helps in noisy areas. They are rather comfortable but due to the ear pressure after about an hour or so they become uncomfortable.

Let me go over a quick Pros and Cons list:

Pros:

- Good wireless reception, works well all around the house and even near by outdoors. Similar range to a good cordless phone.

- Good low and ok midrange.

- Fairly lightweight for this type of device.

- Comes with everything you need including batteries.

- Easy to setup.

Cons:

- Bad highrange, low tone.

- Becomes uncomfortable after a while due to the pressure of the pads.

- When the batteries get low the tuning may have to be adjusted some times, but not really a problem I had much.

In the end I have found it a useful product to have if you like walking around your house listening to tunes from your computer or some other non-portable device. If you want great "highs" look elsewhere, but for general listening these will provide you with a relatively cheap, average wireless solution. For this I give the product 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound quality, but the range is too short, February 8, 2000
By A Customer

The quality is great if you stand next to the base. The level of distortion quickly rises as you move away from the base. But I tested it in my high-rise building and at work, packed with all kinds of computers and electronics.

Also, you have to keep adjusting to a clear channel manually by rotating a knob on both the base and the phones. Very annoying...

Even though the description states that the headphones come with the rechargeable batteries, this is false. It comes with regular ones which lasted ~ 8 hours.

The headphones themselves are too bulky but I did not have a chance to compare them to the Sony's or JVC's ones.

The position of the controls is awkward - Volume control right next to channel tuner, both behind your ear - you'd keep rotating one instead of the other.
