Some Questions I Had, Answered,
By Slarty Bartfast "Climbing Nerd" (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
This is a preliminary review, just bought the thing, still learning about it, but here goes:
I bought this for the car, but it makes a great little tv at home, too. The screen is much nicer than my friends OEM dvd player, much bigger. The speakers plug into the sides, not connected by wires. They snap (not too) easily on/off. The FM modulator is a widget on the lighter plug, and you can set it to a variety of stations to get it to come in. It works just fine. One drawback, the video/audio out (fm modulator) uses the same plugs as the IN, you just switch a switch. So this means you can't run the fm modulator and an input (gamecube) at the same time. But the speakers still work, so gamecube can use the ports as an "in" and the sound can then come out the speakers. Ok, I guess. The thing comes with straps that allow you to suspend it between two seats in the car. But if the seats are tilted, then the screen is tilted. Audiovox should have done some field testing on this. But it's not a huge deal, you can still see it OK. The IR transmitter for the headphones works pretty well, so long as you have a line of sight from the transmitter to the headphones. Headphones are nice, not chintzy (SP?) at all. The screen is beautiful, the dvd player seems to work really well. Can't comment on longevity, just bought it. The whole thing comes in a case that does not have room for the headphones, but everything else fits nicely. The unit has a prop stand integral on the back, which we can use in our kitchen. It also has a standard cable input, which made it really easy to hook to our home cable system, there's different "input" settings for cable v tv v auxiliary. Tv works really well, too. There's a standard plug for home use. Car use requires the cigarette lighter. There's a nice protective cover for it that doubles as the "sling" for the car seat thingy. The speakers can pop right onto this, you can do everything but use the integral prop. SO they give you another one that you can attach to this cover via velcro and it works pretty well. Nice touch. Oh, and the remote is acceptable as well, nothing SUPER fancy, but functional. You can control the tv and the dvd with it. Hope that helps!

Perfect for kids in back seat of the car,

This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I have always been biased against the Audiovox brand since I was a kid. My sister once got an Audiovox stereo and it was awful.
That said, I hesitantly ordered this unit for my car becuase it seemed to have the perfect set of features. It comes with straps for mounting it into your car, a cigararette lighter adapter, and 2 wireless headphones. I've had it about a month now and it is perfect. The included straps worked perfectly in my car. The wireless headphones are great. It can even broadcast the DVD sound over your car's radio if you want. The quality seems to be fine, and as I said, the feature set it perfect if you are looking to set up a DVD player for the kids in the back seat of your car.

I've had this for about 3 weeks now and got it just in time for a family vacation. I'd expect the price to drop even more given the market competition and technology improvements, but for now, just about right given the features provided.
Pluses: Larger size screen, clear picture, wireless headphones, kept the kids occupied during an 8-hour car ride, portability. Negatives: Viewing angle can be tricky if the drivers seat and front passenger seat are not at the same depth. IR radio transmitter tends to be a bit "scratchy" since the antennae provided is relatively short. Speakers provided sometimes rattle at higher volumes. Portability is a double-edged sword. Convenience of transfer to another car, hotel room, etc., but then you have to break down your set-up whenever you park your car in a high-theft area due to its visibility. Cable TV hook-up is possible, but I haven't tried this yet. This could actually serve as a "nightstand" TV (maybe college student TV) since the monitor has a kickstand and complete AV/Cable tv hook-ups. Overall, great piece of equipment to keep your car passengers entertained on long trips. It is fulfilling its purpose for this owner

What a Picture!,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I ordered this model because of features and included accessories. The FM tramsmitter makes watching musicals in the car like watching at home. The wireless earphones fit everyone from myself to my granddaughter. I enjoyed just unpacking it. The most stunning thing, however was the beautiful picture. I was watching a movie shot in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the picture was better than at home on my 35". It was a little pricey, but worth every cent.

Everything we were looking for...and a LOT more!,

We wanted a small, moderately priced, high-quality, flat panel, widescreen TV for our bedroom. Not only does the Audiovox D1020 meet those requirements exceptionally well (with great picture quality, marvelous color balance and saturation; extra-wide viewing angles; excellent sound; easy-to-use, intuitive controls) but it includes features we'd not imagined we'd get: a built-in DVD player, CD and MP3 capability, TWO wireless headsets...AND it's the niftiest little travel video device, complete with a sturdy, well-designed carry-case and a wireless FM modulator to channel the sound through a vehicle stereo system. OK, to avoid static you DO have to look directly at the unit when wearing either of the headsets but that's a tiny flaw in an otherwise superior product.

Having Audiovox DVD problems? Try this FIRST...,
This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I posted this as a comment below, but it actually should be here separately so that perhaps it will solve some problems you may be having.
Here's a l'il sumpthin' you MAY or MAY NOT know about Audiovox DVD players: They **HATE** DVD+R and/or DVD+RW MEDIA... They'll eat 'em or spit 'em out, but they generally ***WON'T*** PLAY THEM! DVD-R and/or DVD-RWs and prerecorded commercial DVDS usually work just fine. So if the DVDs you're havin' probs with are +/PLUSs - just TRY a "-" DVD and see if the probs stop... Personally, I have 5 or 6 Audiovox sideload players from 7" to 10.2" and they all will do exactly the same thing. That's exactly WHY I get such great deals on them USED. No one seems to figure out the +/- problem and Audiovox will HAPPILY $$$ock it to you for an EASY FIX... Failing all else, invest in an extended warranty from Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, eBay or wherever you buy it and let them fight with Audiovox. Remember Audiovox's MOTTO: Service NEXT to NONE. (*EXACTLY* NEXT TO NONE....) Good luck folks!

almost there,
This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
This product boasts a lot of features, the fm modulator, wireless headphones, tv tuner. all of these functions are functional, but they are servicable not superb. all the functions work, but they are all fuzzy. there is static when using the headphones, and the fm modulator, and it is hard to pick up a strong tv signal using an antenna.
a positive is that the audiovox d 1020 can boast these features, and they are all usable. the most impressive aspect to this player is the picture quality. it is crisp and as good as any dvd player i have seen. Secondly, you do not need to buy any accessories for this player. over all, i am happy with this player. i would recommend it for those wanting to buy a worthy widescreen portable dvd player. do not purchase it for the bells and whistles, because they are only servicable. although i do not see many portables with all these features, they are a nice add on, not a selling point.

VERY PLEASED,

This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
We are very pleased with the DVD player. The player worked great. It was very easy to install in our 2001 Suburban. The supplied straps worked fine. I was a little leary of strapping the player between the seats for fear that the player would wiggle and shake around. I went to Circuit City and purchased a 3rd set of wireless headphones from the Car Audio dept. for my 3rd child. The 3rd pair of headphones worked great with the dvd player. I did buy the extended warranty plan for fear that this unit would have some of the problems that the 12" dvd player is having, but, hopefully I will not have to use it.

GREAT DVD and TV tuner ... I love it ! Other reviewers were correct in saying that the only thing that would make this better is to make it battery operated.

Don't buy this product,

This review is from: Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I purchased this unit about about a year and a half ago for a family road trip. We were initially pleased with the design of the unit. It worked well and was very versitile. Recently the video part of the unit went dead. Although the sound works, you have nothing but random noise on the screen. We used this product for probably less than 50 hours total. From what I can tell of other online reviews, Audiovox products are very unreliable. I feel a product that costs this much should last longer than a year and a half of very infrequent usage. Stay away from this product.
