I did encounter the same recharging problems and ...,

This review is from: Audiovox D1420 4.2-Inch Portable DVD Player with Built In Rechargeable Battery (Electronics)
Just do what was mentioned below by the other reviewer. Plug in the DVD with the power switch on and watch an entire movie (90+ minutes). After doing this, remove the plug, turn the POWER switch OFF, then start recharging it. Once you do this, it keeps the charge for up to 2+ hours. Also, I noticed that I encounter the recharging problem when I recharged it with the power switch ON (which usually happens if my stop arrives first before the end of the movie and I throw this into my bag and forget to turn the player off), and then turn it off later thinking that it's the only way for this to take the charge (this is like 2 secs to 5 minutes after realizing I left it on, not the entire 90+ minutes like the resolution above). THAT is when it starts crapping out and only recharges up to a certain point. Just do the process mentioned above again. Total pain if it happens. But I've never had a problem whenever I remember to turn it off before recharging. My friend calls it a battery memory problem. No idea how or why but there is something about it (he read about this apparently - geek).
If not for the recharging issue, I would have given it five stars. But when it's working, definitely worth it! Very light (however you will feel the disk turn if you are holding this). Plays MP3s and shows JPG pictures which I burned on my dvds. Sound quality using earphones... amazing! You can adjust the brigthness of the pictures. Screen is a bit small for closed caption but can be considered a good size for plain viewing. All in all, this is a great product, especially for the price.

No remote and carry-case not mountable,
This review is from: Audiovox D1420 4.2-Inch Portable DVD Player with Built In Rechargeable Battery (Electronics)
I just received mine. It's great.
However, contrary to Amazon's "Product Information", there is NO "full function wireless remote" included. And (also contrary to Amazon's info), the "nylon carry case that's mountable to a car headrest" is surely NOT mountable to a car headrest (unless you have x-ray vision to see through the nylon). I'd very much like to know what's going on. Is there some NEWER version of this product with these features, and Amazon sent me an old one?

Not sure if I will keep it,

Just got it and I'm not sure if I will keep it. The buttons are all in different awkward places, including the manual "open" for putting in the DVD. The "joystick" button for moving thru on- screen menus is hard to use and very annoying. There is no remote control. You have to buy your own cable if you want to connect to a TV; i could swear the description I had read said it was included (it was probably last years description). I ordered silver, and received blue, though that's ok with me. (Had I known pink was available, I would have gone for that. And note some versions come with free headphones at no additional cost). I think the speakers are awful - sound tinny and intrusive- i've known transistor radios with better speakers and may connect it to my I-Dog instead. But the screen is sharp and crisp with flexible controls for brightness and contrast (if you don't mind using the annoying "joystick", so if that's the most important thing and perhaps only important thing for a viewer, only then would I recommend this. The flip up stand is useful.

Battery,
This review is from: Audiovox D1420 4.2-Inch Portable DVD Player with Built In Rechargeable Battery (Electronics)
Tried to watch a DVD with the battery fully charged and found that there is no way to watch a complete movie without recharging the battery. Battery life should be longer.

I had a similar problem with getting the rechargeable battery to take a charge. I sent the first one back, and the replacement had the same problem. I know some of these batteries have memory problems,so I just played 4 movies in a row with it plugged in. Apparently it slowly charged the battery , because it now works fine, and will play for almost 2 hours on a charge. Just needed to kickstart it. Great picture, and sound is awesome with headphones. Nice package with the case, and auto adapter.

Cute Little Portable DVD Player,

I bought this to use on our trip since we have a 4 hour plane ride. The screen size is smaller but I love the compact size ... almost like a portable cd player. The resolution is excellent and the sound quality is better than most. I wish the battery wasn't built in so I could use a second battery but it is rechargeable. It comes with the car adapter and plugs to use on a regular tv so all around I think its sweet for the $119.00 cost. Most players you can't touch for under $200.

I've had multiple battery problems,

I received this for Christmas 2005 as a gift. The new player out of the box wouldn't hold a charge for longer than 2 minutes no matter how many different ways I tried to play and charge it. In February 2006 I had to pay Audiovox $60 for a new battery (item was a gift so I did not have original receipt for the warranty). Now it is October 2006 and the new battery has stopped taking a charge again. Audiovox informes me that I must pay another $35 to have it fixed again (since I am past the 90 day warranty). I'm very angry that in order to make it run for more than 10 months, I'm supposed to pay $95, the cost of a new machine. My husband has a Panasonic portable DVD player that has been running great for 10 years with one battery change so I'm going to look into that brand.

just follow the advice....,
This review is from: Audiovox D1420 4.2-Inch Portable DVD Player with Built In Rechargeable Battery (Electronics)
Following the advice of other reviewers, I played a full length DVD on AC power before charging and I've had no problems with the battery. Small, compact and gets the job done! The 'open' button (to remove a DVD) seems like it doesn't latch properly, but it's never popped open while playing so I guess it's OK.

I am on my second Audiovox D1420 (returned the first). Neither would take a charge. Opened the first one on Christmas morning and I was a excited to try it out - popped in a DVD and before giving a full charge (used the power cord) so I thought maybe that caused the dead battery problem, but when I got the second one I plugged it in right out of the box and was sad to see that the "charge" light went off within 1/2 hour. I left it to charge overnight anyway (and I used a different outlet in a different house than the first). Next morning I put in a DVD - sadly, the thing crapped out after about 3 minutes.
This is a big disappointment for my daughter as it was a gift from Santa and she really loves it. Works great while plugged in but that sort of defeats the purpose of having a portable unit so I am afraid we are going to have to find a different brand/model. I love the screen on the outside so the lid is closed when viewing but because of the battery I'm sorry to say I can't recommend this. Also I tried to call Audivox for help but I could never get a live person on the phone. I got frustrated and just asked Amazon for a replacement but now I have the same problem. Battery is not replaceable either... Very disappointed.

I purchased two of these - one for each child. We charged them the recommended time before use. Neither of them worked, so we charged them again, this time overnight. They still did not work. I have to say, though, that they did work when plugged in. My kids really liked them - they come with the cool carrying bag and they are easily handheld. But if they only work while plugged in, they were not very portable and did not fit our needs. I ended up purchasing some Axion units, which are not handheld and actually more like little laptops, but they work well enough.
