4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect package for younger viewers
If you're searching for a portable DVD player for your own use (or another person over the age of, say, 6), this is not the player you're looking for. Instead, take a look at the Philips PET1030 10.2" Portable DVD Player with Car Mount Kit and comparable units. For the rest of us--those who need a reliable player for trips with the younger kids--this is a solid purchase...

I haven't had this machine very long, but have to say that so far I am not too impressed.
I charged up the battery per the instructions and got a video to check it out. if it hadn't had words on the opening screen I might not have noticed how bad the pixilation is, enough I would guess, to make reading the credits impossible. Neither the color nor sharpness are anywhere near as good as on the phillips (which actually costs a bit less), nor is the build quality.

This machine is unusual, in that it has a detachable battery. This *could* be an advantage as it would allow you to carry a spare and double the battery life...BUT it is just about impossible to find the spare/ replacement battery; even audiovox's site doesn't list them (among the dozens they list for other models). It's also worth noting that the way it hangs off the back is kind of clunky and means the machine will need to be treated with more care than many.

I bought this because it had such good (4.5 stars) reviews, but noticed that many are from people who bought this for a toddler or other young child, and may not even have watched it themselves. I bought this for myself, for travel, and am much less impressed.

Last year my son got a coby 10" tablet for the about the same price (actually, $20 less). It is sturdy, compact and has better picture, better build.

I was looking for something smaller (than his 10")...but this isn't- (only the screen). I may be returning this, as for just a few dollars more you can get a better picture & more features, and EVERY other portable dvd player I've seen is more compact. An 8" player should not weigh as much, and take up as much space as a 10".

I'd recommend the coby, phillips and toshiba players over this one (for good bets in this price range).

If you're searching for a portable DVD player for your own use (or another person over the age of, say, 6), this is not the player you're looking for. Instead, take a look at the Philips PET1030 10.2" Portable DVD Player with Car Mount Kit and comparable units. For the rest of us--those who need a reliable player for trips with the younger kids--this is a solid purchase.

I demand the very best audio and video quality that I can afford. My three year old, on the other hand, could care less whether a display is 1080p or 108p. As long as her DVDs are edu-taining her, she's happy.

The picture on this unit won't impress you. My test viewing of Pirates of the Caribbean was laughable--no matter how I tweaked the video settings (brightness/contrast/sharpness/hue), I couldn't trick a decent picture from the low-res display. However, the type of programming a pre-6 year old watches, such as animated shows and Sesame Street programs, looks quite good.

The package includes everything you need for the road. On our first road trip--a ten-hour roundtrip weekend getaway--we needed every included accessory and nothing more. In the car, the soft carrying case easily attached to the headrest, providing a nice viewing area at eye-level with my child. The car adapter has a lengthy cord that can reach an outlet in the front console. The inclusion of two sets of headphones came in handy--Mom and daughter watched a DVD together while I enjoyed NPR's Sunday line-up. The remote control is another great feature--instead of reaching back to forward to the next chapter, I used the remote from the front seat to find the section my daughter wanted to watch.

All in all, its a no fuss, full-featured portable DVD package perfectly suited for the younger set. And let's face it--any electronic gadget in the vicinity of a child is in constant danger from a spill from a juicebox or a fall from tiny hands. Best if the loss of your investment doesn't make you cry, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good player for price, August 3, 2007

Bought this for my 3 yr old for summer vacation plane trip. Worked well, played DVD's and audio CD's with no issues.
Headphones included with system are a little large for small children, but fit an adults head just fine.
Picture quality was good, audio quality was also good.
All-in-all a good product for the price.

I am very happy with this DVD player. I bought it for my tread mill and it works fine. The sound is not good without the headphones and you have to play around a little with the screen to get the right viewing angle. It is very easy to load and doesn't require a Master's in Engineering to set up. All in all for the price I don't see how you can go wrong.

I've used this little portable DVD player over and over at home and in the car. My 2 year old son watches movies on it all the time. We dropped it on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago and it still works like new. I love that it comes with the car pack.

Oct.15th, 2009 - still works great! So nice to have on long trips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price catagory, February 13, 2008

Many have given it lower star ratings, but for the price the Audiovox D1817 is excellent. If one is looking for home theater resolution, buy a home theater , but if one is looking for DVD (& CD) on the go, this will do it. The sound is level and quality is adequate to the job with its headphones. The ergonomics is good, with all normally used options on the set (extras found on the credit card remote). It is sturdy for what it is, much better than its competitors. I recommend it for no nonsense, on-the-go use, or even off in the corner quiet time. However, it does not have the resolution to adequately display jpg's, so use a computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great!, November 20, 2007

This review is from: Audiovox D1817PK 8-Inch Portable DVD Player Package System (Electronics)
We recently purchased this because we tend to travel often. Our toddler does much better if we play videos for him on the car trip. So far, this has been a great buy. We have found one DVD that it will not play - it gets hung up in a certain spot (and it plays on our regular DVD player) Even so, we love this. When traveling in the car, you can hear the DVD speakers just fine. And there is a brightness control that allows you to make the screen brighter/darker depending on circumstances. We have not yet used the battery, we just plug in the car adapter.

The reason we rated this four stars instead of five is because of the car carrying case. The first time we tried to put the player in it, the elastic strap that supports it, came unattached. So, it wouldn't hold the DVD player. We contacted amazon and they were great about helping us out.

Also, the car carrying case, as far as we can tell, isn't one that can go in between the two seats - it has to go on the back of the seat. For our cars, the strap wasn't big enough to fit around the whole headrest. So it was only supported by one of the metal bars on the headrest and therefore the bottom straps (that connect to the bottom of the seat) we didn't use.

But other than that, it's a lightweight, great little unit. We don't regret buying it. It was the cheapest, highest rated, DVD player we could find.

4.0 out of 5 stars Served Our Purposes Well, September 21, 2007

We got this for our 2 year old when we had to make weekly 6 hour car trips. It served the purpose well, we didn't hear all the crying and whining and moaning that we normally did. She got crackers all over it, and it wiped clean. The picture and sound are not stellar, but it is good enough for a small portable DVD player.

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of garbage, February 21, 2008

This review is from: Audiovox D1817PK 8-Inch Portable DVD Player Package System (Electronics)
I purchased this DVD player in late September and for the first four months it worked fine; then suddenly it just stopped working. After a couple of unanswered emails to "customer service" at Audiovox, I was finally advised that they would try to repair the player for a fee of $79.95!!! That's right, $80 to repair a $115 item!!
I'm going to save my $80 bucks and put it toward a new DVD player, from a reputable manufacturer. As a result of this experience, I will NEVER buy another Audiovox product and I will make a point of telling everyone I know about my terrible experience with them.
