4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price
Just bought this a few days ago from Target on sale for $199. I bought the 3 yr protection plan for an extra $19--figure you can't go wrong. I'm expecting good reliability from Audiovox. The unit works great. I like how you have the option of playing two separate dvd's. The picture quality is good, the audio is fair. It doesn't have an internal battery so you can only...

Just installed the system in our Toyota Sienna today.. Both the units can function as a stand alone, or be slaved together for 1 dvd 2 screens. This will be a handy feature for kids movie on one screen, older movie on another in seperate rows.

The audio is via a single small speaker, but when both are in use, its acceptable quality in a quiet car. The option is there via a seperate cable (sold seperately) for plugging it into external audio (like car speakers), or plug into the handy headphone jack.

My biggest gripe is that the video screen on the 'slave' unit is a much lower quality then the main screen... this is not due to calbes, etc.. as a dvd played on the unit itself has fuzzy lines, etc.. what a shame to cut corners there.

The av jacks are standard size, so feel free to bring your own length of cable for longer runs... the supplied power cables are very long.

The unit works great. I like how you have the option of playing two separate dvd's. The picture quality is good, the audio is fair. It doesn't have an internal battery so you can only plan it with AC and DC current. The remote controls only work when pointing at the units from the back seat, not from pointing at the rear of the unit from the front seat. This makes it tough when sitting in the front seat and trying to make adjustments. Overall it's a great alternative to having an overhead installed DVD player for $700-$1,500...plus you can move it from car to car.

2.0 out of 5 stars built well, but poor sound, July 29, 2007

Unit is solid and the picture is good, but the audio system is underpowered. The built in speaker is tiny, and the internal amp makes it hard to hear in a noisy car even with headphones. (non-noise canceling cheap ones anyway).

I'm going to return my unit. I've been very happy with AudioVox in the past, I'm surprised this unit got through basic testing. I anticipated the problem when I put in a DVD in my living room, before I even tried it in the car.

Note: Unit doesn't come with a 120V adapter, but does have a stand for putting it on a table. Presumably you can use any 12V adapter that fits.

3.0 out of 5 stars Functional with few features., August 19, 2007
This review is from: Audiovox PVS72901 9 Inch Twin DVD Dual Player-Play Same/2 Differrent Movies With Screen Power (Electronics)
We purchased this for 4 day car trip, it was a life saver. Only issues occurred when players sat in hot sun and video started skipping. We cooled the players down and they work fine. We are making sun visors to protect the players. We have not had any problems with video quality or sound volume. Most of the time we only used the audio from one player.

Pros:
- Reads DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW etc. Burn video files as a data disc and they will play. Files must be MPEG1, MPEG2, or DVD format. I fit 4 full movies onto one DVD!
- 9" sreen has decent resolution.
- 2 remotes

Cons:
- Plastic feels cheap
- No AC adapters
- Only one player accepts video input
- Composite video ONLY
- Poor compatibility w/ file formats
- Cheap carrying bag

Given the price I was disappointed by the lack of features. They are functional enough, and 9" screens are not cheap for any model. If I were to do it over I would find a single player w/ lots of features (compatibility, video inputs, etc) and just buy two of them!

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 Individual Player 1 Great Price!, July 22, 2008
This review is from: Audiovox PVS72901 9 Inch Twin DVD Dual Player-Play Same/2 Differrent Movies With Screen Power (Electronics)
I bought this few days ago from Target, mainly because it is on sales and for a price of USD199 for 2 individual 9" DVD players with seperate control, this is a great buy! (Org price was USD259.99)

Good:
Sharp image, adjustable brightness and angle is a PLUS!
Easy to operate and fit on to the headrest.
cable is long enough.
1 power point can operate with 2 player and watch different movies at the same time!
Soild build.
Works well with my Old TV

Bad:
The sound is little disappointing if you have a noise car or there are many kids talking while movies is on.
The unit is slight heavy and slide down even thoug unit is tightly velcro on the headrest.
Does not come with AC adapter and headset.
Recycle bag, does not provide protection for the player.

Solution:
Weak sound - No problem for me as I have a quiet car but still i bought a cheap headphone from walmart, cost me only USD7.00 and it is great!
No AC adapter - Again I purchased the universal AC adapter from walmart for only USD 16.00, adjust the Voltage to 12V and it works well!
For the bag, another again, I brought 2 individual padded pouch from walmart to protect the screens and use it with the bag.. another simple but effective way.

Overall I am happy with my purchase. I will update the review after months of usage.

1.0 out of 5 stars not perfect, June 27, 2008
This review is from: Audiovox PVS72901 9 Inch Twin DVD Dual Player-Play Same/2 Differrent Movies With Screen Power (Electronics)
I bought this product at the local target for $269 + tax.
The plan was simple: provide videos from my iPod to my kids sitting in the 2nd and 3rd row of the car.
The primary unit only has AV out while the second unit only has AV in.
This makes sense if you want to watch DVDs but it also means you can't plug video games or ipod for videos on both units. The cable to link the primary unit to the secondary is also barely long enough to link both units when installed on the first row head rests. If you add to this that my original plan was to go from first row head rests to second row head rests, this is way too short. Luckily, these units use a standard composite cable which makes it easy to buy an extension.
The monitors are not very bright but the resolution is decent and the size makes up for it.
The deal breaker for me was the sound level: it's totally unacceptable for car use. I even plugged in my noise cancellation headset with an amplifier without much improvement. And I have a brand new ultra quiet SUV.
With that, there's no AC adapter so your only choice is to use it in the car.
I'm returning the units.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get the extended warranty!, June 21, 2009

We've owned this product for less than a year. After reading multiple reviews that the DVD players often stopped working and needed repair, I purchased the extended warranty. I bought this anyway because I had friends who owned them and had never had problems, so I thought maybe it was just a few people who had problems. Plus Target had them on sale fo less than $200.

Ours worked for 6 months, and then both players stopped being able to read the DVDs. The movie would just stop playing or get stuck on "loading" and then never actually started playing. I called the 1-800 number on the warranty, and they sent us a box and shipping label ASAP to be shipped off to a repair place. We received the unit back in less than 4 days with an invoice stating that the laser scanners had been repaired on both units. We took them out of the box, hooked them up, and they worked for about an hour before the same problem happened again. Target has assured us that if they are not fixed this next time, that our money will be refunded. I wouldn't buy them again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Value, August 5, 2008
By
This review is from: Audiovox PVS72901 9 Inch Twin DVD Dual Player-Play Same/2 Differrent Movies With Screen Power (Electronics)
After purchasing the Polaroid 8 inch dual screen model which had horrible screen quality. The Philips 7 inch dual screen model, in which the slave screen had sound but no picture. We decided to give the Audiovox a try. I must say, after seeing how the other two were built, it seems to me that the most thought went into the Audiovox.

- To change the dvd, you press the button and the whole screen tilts down. Simple enough, I must say I am slightly concerned about my kids loading the DVD and pressing down on it, but the design is nice. On the philips, you had to open the velcro that mounted the hardware to the headrest to change the DVD, so this is definately better.
- The tilt screen is a nice addition to adjust for height.
- Screen quality is nice. Not awe inspiring, but for the price it is very reasonable quality for watching movies. I do like the large screen size.

- I will agree that the volume is a bit low, but works fine in a quiet vehicle.
- Some people have complained that this unit does not come with an AC adapter. While this is true, it is quite obvious by looking at the player that it is designed to be mounted to the headrest of a car.
- I would have liked a longer composite cable to string between the two units to better conceal the wires, but am content with what was provided in the box.

Overall, I feel that this was a good buy. Audiovox paid attention to detail and made the unit simple to install and use. I do like that they focussed their attention on the DVD player and not a lot of add-ons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!!!!!!!!!, January 5, 2008
This review is from: Audiovox PVS72901 9 Inch Twin DVD Dual Player-Play Same/2 Differrent Movies With Screen Power (Electronics)
We bought this product at Target for around $200 last summer
and didn't even use it often because it was two pieces of junk . After the first one fried itself along with my DVD, we figured we had another one to use so whatever...Surprise, surprise, the second one just imploded. You shake it and you can hear all the parts rattling around inside. It was a disaster from day one. You could never hear it and the picture quality was always poor. Didn't even last 6 months before both screens broke. A terrible, substandard product. I don't even want to give it one star but I have no choice because one star is the lowest I can rate it! Buyer beware!

I purchased this unit from Target. The video is great, kids can watch two separate movies, etc. but all of that doesn't matter because they can't hear them. Even bought good quality ear phones & there is not enough sound to hear in a moving vehicle.
