This review is from: Audra Mae (MP3 Download)
This 5-song digital EP is the earliest known music publication of Audra Mae. "Cliché", "He Don't Kiss Me", and "Milk and Honey" are love songs, and the playful lyrics of "Milk and Honey" appeal somewhat to the imagination (of men). "Turn Around" is about letting go of a dysfunctional relationship. "Here I Go Again" is a cover of the song originally recorded by the English rock band Whitesnake in their 1982 album Saints & Sinners. Audra Mae surely could rock, although it is not her style. The real Audra Mae eventually emerged in "Haunt" & "The Happiest Lamb", which are more in the folk & country genres.
Audra Mae was born in 1985 in Oklahoma into a musical family. Her maternal great grandaunt was Judy Garland, who was fondly remembered as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, and Liza Minnelli is her cousin. She dropped out of college at the age of 19 and moved to L.A. to find her fortune. A talented singer-songwriter, she writes her songs in a unique story-in-a-song style, based on things that she sees, hears, and does. Some are from her personal experience; others she makes up to express a thought in her mind. She sings her songs in a rich "whisky" voice, with sparse instrument accompaniment, usually an acoustic guitar and a drum set, sometimes augmented with other instruments like mandolin, accordion, tambourine, piano, and pump organ. She came to fame when she penned the lyrics of "What I was born to be" in the debut album of Susan Boyle, "I Dreamed a Dream". On October 2009, Audra Mae released a second 5-song digital EP, "Haunt", and, on May 2010, her debut LP album, "The Happiest Lamb". When she is not making albums, she is on tour performing in front of a live audience and slowly building a loyal following. She is following the footsteps of her forebears, perhaps on the yellow brick road.
