Book Description

May 25, 2002
In his distinguished career as Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby has taken some of the benchmark photos of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda but he's unequivocal about who was his favorite subject: Edda van Heemstra Helpburn-Ruston, also know as Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot a new starlet one morning in '53. It was a humdrum commission for the regular studio portraitist now credited with having virtually invented the photojournalistic motion picture still, but when he met the Belgian beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. "She took my hand like...well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men's hearts, " he recalls. As Hepburn's career soared upwards following her US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the man facets to Hepburn's beauty and elegance as she progresses from her debut to the career high of My Fair Lady in '63. Willoughby's studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors and returning to her private self, comprise one of photography's great platonic love affairs and an unrivalled record of one of last century's touchstone beauties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photographic Treasure!, September 26, 2002
This review is from: Audrey Hepburn: An Intimate Collection (Paperback)
I think there are few individuals who came as close to perfection in both beauty and personality as Audrey Hepburn. This book proves my point. Audrey was so incredibly beautiful that a bad photograph was probably impossible to take of her! Bob Willoughby shares his collection of photographs with us and it is a real treasure. Though the photos span a relatively short period of time in her life, they are nonetheless glimpes of Audrey both on and off screen. Both black and white and color photographs are featured. My favorite photos are the ones of Audrey in "Two For The Road", which is, by the way, one of the best films I have ever seen. If you love Audrey, BUY this book!!! You will not regret it!

An excellent book which pays tribute to a beautiful attractive lady. What is especially sad is the fact that Mr.Willoughby had been with this beautiful actress from the start, and was able to follow her career and her personal life with never before seen pictures.I agree with Mr.Willoughby-I miss her too.

This book is full of great images that cfome to life. the narrative that is woven along the book adds a very personlized touch to the photographs one is viewing. The artistict quality of each picture is essential to the portrayal of both actress and photographer. This book is a great addition to any collection.
