About the Author

American author whose books combine romance with history. Mary is chiefly remembered for To Have and To Hold (1900), and Andrey (1902. She was the first woman to speak before the Virginia General Assembly on giving the right to vote for women. She was unique in that almost everything she wrote was published on both sides of the Atlantic. Canadian and London publishers extended her works around the globe. 2.0 out of 5 stars Love (Early) American Style, June 28, 2009
By
A. Woman (Greeneville, Tennessee USA) - See all my reviews
Audrey is a poor Colonial orphan who is in love with Marmaduke. No, he's not the big dog, but he is a Big Cheese, which is part of the problem. Marmaduke is way above Audrey's station, and his society won't accept her. They attack Audrey with vicious rumors and public snubs. Marmaduke isn't really much better. He waffles between wanting to love Audrey and considering marrying Evelyn, a family friend and his social equal. Audrey has her own problems with trader Jean Hugon. Poor Jean. He's half French, half Indian, and doesn't really belong in either world. Now here he is in love/lust with a woman who doesn't want to have anything to do with him. Is it any wonder he becomes the villain in this piece?

Then, just when you're reading the very last pages of the book. Just when you expect the payoff you feel you deserve. Just when Audrey and Marmaduke decide to marry, to heck with what everyone else says - BAM! - Audrey is killed! After all that time and emotion you've invested in caring about the title character, she dies! How could author Mary Johnston do that to her readers?? How??
