I have a Bose portable sound dock and I like it very much but the Audyssey beats it hands down.

I compared the Logitech S715i (C$149), JBL OnAir ($299), Audyssey SOMA ($299), Bose Sounddock Portable ($299 sale), Monster Dr.Dre beatbox ($439), and Bose Sounddock 10 ($649). I couldn't find the B&W Zeppelin Air ($599) on display. I've read that it has great sound, but it's by far the biggest of these docks and it apparently has some quality issues based on many reviews.

Sound is the main deciding factor for me in a compact/portable dock. I don't need a CD player, radio or alarm clock given I have the Yamaha MCR040 dock in the bedroom.

After reading the reviews, comparing features and prices, I went to the stores to hear the docks play the same mix of songs in my iPhone4 playlist (hiphop, slow jams, ballads, dance etc). I didn't like the sound of the following: Logitech (sound is not solid throughout the range), JBL (distorts even at low volumes), Monster (too much bass but inaccurate treble especially at low volumes).

The Audyssey wasn't on display. Bose 10 didn't sound much better than the Portable so I ended up buying the Bose Portable. At home I noticed a lot of distortions with songs with heavy bass. I wasn't satisfied so I also ordered the Audyssey online. I then compared the Audyssey head to head with the Bose and the Audyssey proved superior. The Bose sounded thin and really struggled/distorted with hiphop/heavy bass songs. The Bose is also not truly portable like a boombox to take camping or to the beach given its volume distribution outside, and high price!

In addition, the Audyssey has other features the Bose does not such as bluetooth. Bluetooth allows you to listen to your music library wirelessly so you can use iPhone's other functions.

Audyssey South of Market Audio Dock ROCKS!!! There was a lot of thought that went into this device. I love the fact I can plug this up to my TV, sinc with my iphone and when my phone rings, the volume of the TV goes off so you can answer. Really cool. I keep my phone in my pocket and it streams my music from it's ipod, pandora, or even picks up the audio from videos played on my iphone. There is a little difference in sound docked vs. in my pocket, but not very much. Just remember if you have your ipod, iphone in you pocket and leave the room, it disconnects.
I did a lot of research before purchasing this dock. I really wanted the Bose Dock, my friend has one and it does have great sound, but after reading all the reviews, I decided to go with the Audyssey. I am glad I did. So many more features with a great sound as good as Bose and maybe even better. I could go on and on about it, but I'll just say... It's the best new "toy" I have. I love it!

I have the 2nd unit now. I installed this one in the Kitchen. I placed it on top of the refrigerator. At 6'2" this works for me. Because the unit is high up I can reach the front easily but getting to the back means turning unit around to reach rocker off/on switch, the rocker switch to turn unit off is in lower back of unit. I solved this by powering the unit thru a wireless remote controlled switchable power outlet from skylink ws100 (amazon) to turn it off when not in use. I wish soma had the off/on button on the remote control, but it doesn't. The remote control has magnetic back to attach to soma but not strong enough because it tends to slide down the side of soma and stops on table top. Remote sticks to the refrigerator nicely, I guess because frig is flat not curved like the soma sides. I turn the volume up high on the base unit and use the slider volume control on my iphone to set the room volume.
When you get a phone call (undocked) it will ring thru the soma. When you answer the phone the iphone screen lists choice, iphone or audyessy Dock just tap one to use.

Love the sound of this unit. Loud enough with clear sound. Great Blue tooth. Really great range.
Best of all you DO NOT have to remove case when you put iPhone 4 on the charging connector, big plus for me. I have 1st unit in 2nd floor bedroom. I also use it to boost the sounds of lap top, great for enhancing sounds when watching video. Really makes my alarm clock app on iPhone stand out.
Great range on Bluetooth. I was shocked when I pulled into my driveway and my phone synced with the soma which was on 2nd floor back bedroom. Did I say great range!!!

I liked this soma so much I ordered a 2nd unit for downstairs that should be delivered next week, $299 at Costco. Then I'll get rid of the old clunky boom box on the shelf that no longer plays cd's.

I'm fortunate to live near an Apple Store, so I was able to audition this speaker with my own music on my iPhone. In fact, I tried out all the speakers on display and none had better sound than the SOMA (and most had a far less satisfying sound). I downloaded the free Audyssey app, and was able to experiment with various settings. I found that, for my music (all ripped with Apple Lossless Encoding) I needed only slight tweaks of the tone controls, and didn't need the equalizer.

And it sounded spectacular! Clean, tight bass, great midrange, and tight, crisp highs.

For me, the Bluetooth speakerphone also works very well. Much like dedicated high-end speakerphones, the SOMA has a primary microphone on the front, and a second microphone on the rear for noise and echo cancellation. I'm on AT&T, and have had numerous conference calls using the SOMA and my iPhone 4. Everyone has been complimentary about the sound quality.

One final - and important - point about Audyssey. Their customer service is outstanding! When I had issues with my unit, their customer service was very helpful and thorough in helping me troubleshoot the problem. Then Audyssey quickly replaced my SOMA, and the second unit works flawlessly.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Audyssey and the SOMA.
