Simply the best British comedy of all time, nothing more needs to be said. Buy it, watch it, enjoy it, love it. Sadly, only a few episodes are in the US NSTC format, but this will not stop you enjoying them.

Auf Weidersehen Pet is a 1983 British comedy series about a group of working-class Englishmen who, because of high unemployment in England at the time, go to Germany in search of work. In Dusseldorf they find jobs as labourers at a construction site. With their on-site accommodation consisting of one large room with a number of beds, the men are practically living in each other's pockets, which allows for a lot of practical jokes, but also results in a good deal of frustration from the lack of privacy. And being away from their wives and families, some of the men require more personal space than others--particularly when it comes to extramarital entanglements!

Familiar faces include Kevin Whately (Sergeant Lewis from the Inspector Morse series), Tim Healy (The Grand), and Timothy Spall (Kevin from The Outside Edge). Though this series is one that can be enjoyed by all, it strikes me that it is geared a little more to the male market (being about a group of men working in construction). I should also mention that the accents are working-class and as thick as treacle. I am generally quite comfortable even with the heaviest of accents, but with thick accents from so many different regions in one show--well, I must admit I was struggling a bit. It requires close attention, to say the least.

Each episode is 50 minutes, and there are two episodes on the tape. The tape with "If I Were a Carpenter" and "Private Lives" is the first tape in the series. There is also a second tape (which contains "The Fugitives" and "The Lovers"). This is billed as being "[p]erhaps the funniest comedy series of the 80s," but with only four episodes available in total, it is difficult to make a proper assessment. It usually takes a few episodes just to get used to the characters and their situations, and this series is no exception. I have both tapes, and although the four episodes I saw were cute enough, I would have liked to see more; as it stands, I feel unable to either recommend it or not recommend it (although I definitely think the series has (or had) potential). At the very least, I hope I've been able to provide a little insight into what to expect for those curious about the series.
