Book Description

March 1, 1987
A concise commentary, highly useful as an accompaniment to the reading of the Augsburg Confession itself. All who are interested in the doctrinal traditions of the Lutheran Church can find here the means to increase their theological and historical understanding of the text. The theological perspective of the Augsburg Confession is made clear by comparisons with the writings of Luther and other Reformers, as well as with other main streams of the Christian tradition. Included for each article of the confession are the English translation of the text, notes on the text, and theological and historical commentary on the meaning of the article. Also included are an extensive introduction to the writing of the confession, footnotes, a selected bibliography, and an index. In its Danish, Swedish, and German editions this commentary has become a indispensable introduction to this classic confession of the Lutheran Reformation. Here is a source of fresh insight into the meaning of the Augsburg Confession -- and guidance into the meaning of the gospel for today.

5.0 out of 5 stars AC - Learn what the original Lutherans believe, February 4, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Augsburg Confession The (Paperback)
The Augsburg Confessions lays down the basic beliefs of the early Lutherans with commentary. The actual confession is very simple and to the point. The commentary elaborates and goes into detail, context, etc. I was amazed at the simplicity and conciseness.

If you want the book, DON'T buy the Large Print edition. Although it's cheaper, the print is unclear.

If you want to know what Lutherans teach, then this is a book for you.
I found it useful in my theology studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Fine Introduction to the Most Important of the Lutheran Confessions, November 16, 2011
This review is from: Augsburg Confession The (Paperback)
Whether you are a Scandinavian Lutheran who relies solely on the Augsburg Confession or a confessional Lutheran who upholds the entire Book of Concord you will find this to be an extremely helpful introduction to the AC. Grane explains the theology and background behind the terse statements of each article of the AC. Grane was a top notch Luther scholar who has written a work here useful both to entry level seminarians and laity alike. I used this book to teach the theology of the AC in light of Scripture to a group of Lutherans every week for several months.

Excellent Resource.
