I really don't know why this album has got 3 "1 star" reviews. The whole album is masterfully sang by Bobby Caldwell and the musicianship is just as impressive. It's not even that far removed from the material that he usually does in my opinion, which was a big criticism in the previous reviews. It is more rock-oriented as a whole than usual, but elements of what people define as "rock" can be heard in many Bobby Caldwell songs. This is the same man who wrote songs like "Niagara Falls" and "What Kind Of Man Would I Be" for Chicago, which are "rock ballads" no less, and Bobby Caldwell has written and performed countless songs of a similar fashion. As a huge Bobby Caldwell fan, I say that if you enjoy his music like most of us do, then you can't beat this album for a night-time drive. It has cross-over elements of all the genres that we have come to enjoy from Bobby Caldwell. It's the business...

It's funny how we listeners can have totally different opinions sometimes. Sure, Bobby Caldwell works better with soul-oriented pop, but despite this fact, I think August Moon is a great album. Caldwell had by this time lost his American listeners, and therefore focused on Japan, which was the only country that this album was released in, at least for ten years.
The Japanese called Caldwell "Mr. AOR" around these years, and it can be heard on songs like "Sherry" and "Cover Girl" in which influences from contemporary groups such as TOTO is heard most clearly. Caldwell, however, mixes up his jazz and soul roots which sometimes gives us misleading songs. The majority, however, is good, despite the fact that this album is not the most admirable in Caldwell's amazing catalog.

I hope Bobby Caldwell wouldn't mind me saying that this isn't one of his greatest efforts. The song 'Once You Give In' is nice, but not more. The rest of the cd is a crossover-mixture between a weak billy joel and ........i don't no. save money folks.
