Editorial Reviews

Stevens is a composer whose music is informed and guided by deep connections with visual media, literature, travel, past and present. This album of works for solo cello is a reflection on modern times. Each piece takes advantage of extensive techniques for cello to create a musical atmosphere that is expansive, dramatic, and original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate Seattle Cellist May 1, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Paige Stockley, one of Seattle's top cellists, performs this original work with great passion, virtuosity, and sensitivity.

The composer, Peter Vukmirovic Stevens, clearly knows how to write for the solo cello, utilizing the full range of the instrument and fulling exploring all its possibilities, including speciall effects such as double-stops, ponticello, etc.

Quiet a piece and wonderful performance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking and Edgy April 30, 2013
By Noel
Format:Audio CD
A beautiful and dramatic album. I am not someone who has a big collection of classical music or solo string instrument albums, but I am so glad that I found this album. This is not your stodgy uncle's classical cello album, but a forward thinking collection that is incredibly moving.

I'm especially fond of "Thunder, Perfect Mind," which is a bit eerie and incredibly lush. The occasional unconventional sounds of the cello are interesting, as with the Jimi-Hendrixesque interludes in "Tempus Edax Rerum." There's an emotional intensity to this album which, perhaps ironically, I find incredibly calming and comforting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stevens' Music Is A Living Voice June 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD
The rich, sensuous scope of the compositions resonates as a living, breathing voice. Evocative and expansive, the vibrations of the cello linger beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Found! May 23, 2013
Format:Audio CD
There is always something missing, but not in this masterful composition.

In this world, there is always something missing. At times these are things that have left us or we have lost. At other times these are things that haven't yet been created. There is always some thing missing. But what happens when those missing pieces: lost; left; not yet devised; find their way towards one another? I'd argue that somehow, when that happens, is when we receive something truly new in to our world. We receive a gift that feels like it should have always been there, accessible, but also maybe retaining some of the just-out-of-reach mystery. This translates into a sense of completeness, a fulfilling of our want.

For me, many missing pieces were placed by Peter Vukmirovic Stevens in August Ruins. Every thing that somehow needed to be there has found a place. In listening to this recording as my backdrop for many days, in coming back to it again and again for room and inspiration - I am also certain that there were many things that wanted to be there and are not. They were deftly, with all sincere apologies from both Peter and Paige (and maybe kind promises of future invitations) asked to not stay. This is the making of music of this delight. This is an art that rarely occurs.

I am fortunate for this collection to have found its way to me.

Format:MP3 Music
This is a beautiful CD--melodic, moody in places and ceaselessly interesting. The cello playing is sensitive and powerful. Loved it.
