I received this cookbook as a shower gift ten years ago from my 90-something year old great, great aunt. At the time, I thought it looked a bit hokey...it just goes to show that we young cooks have so much to learn from those that have gone before us! It has all of my family's favorites -- it is usually the place that I can find the recipe for all of those good things I remember from my childhood. I have over 60 cookbooks, and it is one of my most-used! This one is a "must-have".

Clara Edwards Johnson's recipe earned her another ribbon for award- winning pickles. Aunt Bee has her "Kerosene Cucumbers" (albeit now edible) in this collection of culinary and show quotes cookbook. I have had a fine time reading this cookbook and enjoying it as much as a highly recommended novel. Eventually, I will hit the kitchen and prepare the delectable dishes and desserts. For the time being, I find myself immersed in the memorable nuggets from many of the show's episodes. I am laughing with glee and relishing insider information about the citizens who inhabited Mayberry. Authors Ken Beck, Jim Clark,, and the recipe editor Julia M. Pitkin have a little gem of a cookbook here...not only for what you can concoct and eat, but for what feeds your soul--memories of The Andy Griffith Show and why it is so beloved today. Even if you don't know a saucepan from a sommelier, you will want this cookbook in your library.

Ok, to be honest...are all of the recipes in this book winners? No. But have I found any other cookbook where I could answer that questions affirmatively? No. Have you?

Anyway, this was a hand me down book that I inherited and I enjoyed reading the recipes and the made up history behind where they were served (did it come from Aunt Bee's kitchen or the diner or was it something that bachelor Barney made for a date?).

Nobody was more surprised than me when I made Flora's Meatloaf Mallerby. Oooh buddy! Anybody who has had my meatloaf since then swears up and down that it's THE best EVER!

But....don't try to make the orange chicken....that didn't work quite as well! :)

I don't like to plan menus, and this book starts off with 30, including menus for holidays. I enjoy the photos and dialogue from the TV series mixed in with the recipes. The book contains a variety of recipes, not just what you might expect to see being served on the show. The submissions by cast members come with stories that are fun. I always enjoy reading the story behind a new recipe. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who loves southern cooking, enjoys trying new recipes, or loves the Andy Griffith show.
