Book Description

4 and upP and up

So much to see! So much to do! Open this book, and you can . . . smell the tall flowers in Aunt Giraffe′s garden, sip juice with a big blue goose, eat oodles of noodles with some poodles, chirp a cheery song with a little bluebird, fish in a frosty pond, and much, much more! With Jack Prelutsky′s twenty-eight hilarious poems and Petra Mathers′s brilliant, beautiful paintings, this classic collection for the youngest child is filled to the brim with smiles and silliness.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The creators of the popular The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders (2002) offer another picture-book poetry collection of gleeful nonsense verse and captivating illustrations. As in Frogs, many of the poems have a geographical theme and feature animal tourists exploring cities and landmarks around the U.S. In Toledo features four fat geese who parade the streets in wild outfits; in Ten Mice Went to Denver, the tiny creatures stayed there for weeks / to gaze at the Rockies' / magnificent peaks. The bouncing, rhyming couplets are best read aloud, and young kids will easily commit some of the contagiously silly lines to memory. Mathers' watercolor artwork greatly enhances each selection. Double-page spreads show the winsome characters with lots of feeling on each face. Particularly charming are the animal friends, such as the pigeon in leather cap and goggles, shown lounging in a field as he regales a rapt pig with tales of flight. A lighthearted, high-spirited collection for sharing any time, in groups or one-on-one. Engberg, Gillian

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and fun, October 5, 2007
This review is from: In Aunt Giraffe's Green Garden (Hardcover)
I picked this up at our library because it looked interesting. My almost 2y/o is a little too wiggly to sit still for this, but I love the fun and funky poems and beautiful illustrations for each. I may get this for myself and just hope that my son learns to love it too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bella's response, August 11, 2007
This review is from: In Aunt Giraffe's Green Garden (Hardcover)
I gave this book to a very bright 3 year old. She fell in love with it and insisted that it be read to her daily. Through this book she will begin the process of learning to read, as well as learning geography. Right on, Prelutsky!

3.0 out of 5 stars In Aunt Giraffe's Green Garden, March 4, 2008
This review is from: In Aunt Giraffe's Green Garden (Hardcover)
Mmmmm.........this was a bit disappointing. I bought it for ages 3 through 5. It can be used as a geography lesson by the parent, but it will take parental help, and only on the older end of the age spectrum. Features cities, states, and countries as subjects of various poems. You will need a globe and maps to really help the child learn the geography concepts.
