Biography

The Orb are an English electronic music group known for spawning the genre of ambient house. Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty, The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London. Their early performances were inspired by ambient and electronic artists of the 1970s and 1980s, most notably Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Because of their "trippy" sound, The Orb developed a cult… Read more in Amazon's The Orb Store

Editorial Reviews

Like a stash of old Irish potato whiskey, Alex Patterson (the Orb) gets tastier, stronger, and more covertly mischievous as he gets older. The first Aubrey remix set was, in retrospect, a test drive. This second double-disc is the full-throttle adventure, the work of an ambient-sound scientist not afraid of anything, not genres or boundaries or conventions. Patterson's work--floating, cushiony, and angelic--is pure therapy. His samples and segments inhabit the record like relics from an old antique shop. Classical piano jives alongside Pato Banton's "Beams of Light" while Tangerine Dream cruise alongside Witchman's dirty hip-hop-based "Angel Art," and somehow it all makes sense. Lisa Stansfield's "Time to Make You Mine" mix is deliciously smooth ambient soul, and the Orb's pulsing take on Sun Electric's "Red Summer" is a tasty stew of ambient, dub, and house. But the defining point of the entire set comes with Rick Wright's own remix of his solo cut "Runaway," a haunting piece of music that would have made Jean-Michel Jarre or Peter Gabriel proud. Wright is, of course, one part of Pink Floyd. Patterson has often been viewed as Floyd's only true child, and here the family traits are apparent. This volume is a fitting jewel in a rich and expansive collection of ambience, and it underscores that Patterson is still the master of this dreamy, surreal genre. --Steffan Chirazi

5.0 out of 5 stars How can this NOT be good??, September 5, 2001

Did you like the first one? Have you listened to their BBC radio shows? If you liked them then this shall aim to please. The orb has this way of making their music seem like you are doing more than just listing to songs. News anouncers from one side, while a small and somewhat familiar piano and guitar riff slowly comes in and out while the dub bass keeps on rolling and rolling then birds chirp and suddenly you're in a world of ambient silence, which mostly, is not silent at all. Continuing to create excellent covers in full orb style!!! orb delivers!!! You ever hear those remixes that sound almost like the original?? Well not this dual disc. Infull orb force, this is what the orb does best. Not a bad song on here. Get this. Feel the love. Dig the music kids. Good music does'nt last forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Ole Fashioned Orb Fun, September 12, 2001

Not only does this sound like original Orb material, but it sounds more like vintage Orb material. Back to the days of Live 93 and UFO Orb, not like some of their more disappointing later releases (i.e. their last 2).
Back to loopy beats, groovey bass lines, Floydian sound non-sequitors, and full brain damaged chill room fun. As a rabid Orb fan, its nice to see them going back to this direction. It doesn't approach their pinnacle achievement of Orbus Terrarum but then again what else ever has? Keep churning the Aubrey's groove out guys, I'll gladly pay my hard earned for any follow ups you care to treat us to.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Incredible Orb Remixes!, September 7, 2001

This is a very worthy follow-up to Vol. 1 of the Orb remixes, which came out a few years ago. What's great about these remixes is that the songs basically become Orb songs, with only snippets and pieces of whatever original they're working with. So, basically you can look at this as a new 2-CD Orb release, even though many of the tracks on here are quite old. Typical great Orb beats, ambient washes, great sound and spoken word samples. A lot of these are pretty hard to find, so this is a great collection! The Meat Beat Manifesto remix of "Radio Babylon" alone is worth the price, plus there's remixes of artists as diverse as System 7, The Grid, Lisa Stansfield, Can, and many more! If you like the Orb, run to your nearest record store and pick this up!!
