3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a look, even with the horrendous sub-titles, September 24, 2006

This review is from: Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (DVD)
The following pertains to the dvd distributed by the Asian Video Movies Wholesalers Inc. If there are other distributors of this film out there, you might wanna get that version.

...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya is another cheesy cinematic fluff done up Bollywood style. But, because it stars Aishwarya Rai, it then becomes a decidedly more entertaining experience. But it's still cheesy.

Now because Bollywood films tend to run at around 150 minutes, there is a lot of plot baggage thrown in to fill in the gaps, and it's no different here. ...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (which I think means "Falling in Love...) tells the story of Aishwarya Rai's character, Aashi (though the sub-title refers to her as Aarshi), who hails from a wealthy family, presided by her lovable curmudgeon of a grandfather. When Aashi's flighty father arranges her wedding with Rohit Malhotra, the son of an old friend, the headstrong Aashi determines to sneak a look at her future husband. She flies to Switzerland, where Rohit has a thriving garment business, but has problems meeting up with her elusive spouse-to-be. Meanwhile, a man she bumps into at the airport (and whom she mistakenly accuses as a thief) falls in love with her and annoyingly begins to pursue her. A good portion of the film involves the two engaging in playful cat and mouse games. And because Bollywood is the World Capital of Coincidences, it doesn't come too much as a shock when you find out that this guy is actually Rohit, which then makes it okay for Aashi, in return, to fall in love with him. Of course, the first real complication arrives just in time for the movie intermission, but it isn't necessarily the last. Other contrived subplots involve a bank loan gone sour, a sudden medical illness, and a first encounter in a hair salon which alienates Aashi's hair-challenged father from our not-so-sensitive male lead.

Get set 'cause there are a whopping 12 musical numbers in this one (although three of those are the same song, done over). Most of them are worth enduring for the sight of Aishwarya Rai dancing. There are two songs I really liked for different reasons. "Meri Sanson" (Parts 1, 2, & 3) is a quiet, beautiful love song which resonates more than the title song. On the other hand, "Uttar Dakhin" is a fun number featuring a drunk Aashi cavorting in the streets of Switzerland. To see Aishwarya Rai gracefully, exotically moving in rhythm, even inebriatedly, is dazzlement itself brought to life.

A few complaints: first, the truly abysmal sub-title work was an awful distraction. Often, it wasn't in sync with the actual speaker. Also, there were times when the words blended in with the background. Worst of all, there were frequent moments where there was no translation at all. When you have to pay extra-close attention reading the sub-titles, trying to figure out who said what and when, well, you can see how it affects the enjoyment of the movie. Also, the songs had no sub-titles. So, a big, freakin' boo at the sub-titles. And some hisses. Also, other than the "song selection" button, there are no special features.

The big finish of the film was melodramatic cheese personified, but I could've dealt with that. But there was a special effects sequence on the airport runway that was so crappy and so very poorly executed (was it not obvious that these f/x were computer generated? And badly generated, at that). All you can do upon watching this awful runway scene is shake your head and chuckle.

The acting performances were mixed in quality. While I don't think anyone stood out as being top-notch in this one, Beena was darn good as Bobby's mother. As Gayetri Oberoi, the successful head of a banking company, Beena infused her character with a serene elegance. Shammi Kapoor as Aashi's understanding grandfather is equally wise and cranky, a direct counterpoint to Anupam Kher's Kailashnath Kapoor, Aashi's father, who was truly silly, vacuous, and annoying. I haven't seen Bobby Deol in anything else, but he was pretty okay here, though he grated on my nerves at times. But I wouldn't mind seeing him in another role. Aishwarya Rai has done better work elsewhere, though, don't get me wrong; she doesn't suck here. But the script or the plot...or something, I dunno...just never gave her much to work with. Still, Aish is gorgeous and earnest and here, she is introduced dramatically and playfully in a dance number. But, yeah, she overacted some here.

...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya is typical Bollywood fare and, in terms of excellence, falls somewhere in the middle of Aish's movies. Aishwarya Rai fans will devour this movie, while more casual fans might possibly derive some enjoyment from it but then wonder what the fuss was all about. For me, this was initially gonna be a three star effort for Aish and company, but I had to take off half a star for the unprofessional sub-title work and the crappy CGI at the finale.
