3.0 out of 5 stars Hey...if it works, it'll be neat.
From my martial arts training in the past I can tell you that AT LEAST some the things in this book are true and basic. I have yet to really dive into the techniques and try everything seriously. There are many pictures and diagrams to aid you and step by step instructions on how to do things. I wish there was some theory behind the instructions given and not just...

5.0 out of 5 stars My thoughts on Aura, Ki, & healing, May 22, 2000

This review is from: Aura, Ki & Healing (Paperback)
When I first began studying Karate under Sensei Sugiyama, I remember feeling somewhat bewildered at the amount of time and attention we had to devote toward the cultivation and manipulation of "ki" energy. Unlike his more experienced students, I had difficulties dealing with this seemingly intangible force. This soon changed as I not only began to physically send and receive ki energy, I was able to see the aura generated by this energy around my hands and other people in the class. The lessons featured in Shojiro Sugiyama's 'Aura, Ki, & Healing' guide the reader in a step by step manner toward unleashing and controlling this innate energy. The writing and illustrations are concise and easy to understand. I recommend this book for anyone (whether they be students of the martial arts or not) who might be interested in developing better self-maintenance skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is the best self teaching toll usefull in everyday life, November 27, 2002

The Book "Aura, Ki and Healing" is a most comprehensive explanatory tool for intelligent person and for dummy. I consider myself a dummy, even though, I have two master degrees (MBA from Kellogg and Engineering)and like detailed explanations of everything. I participated in healing workshops and have read many martial arts books. I have been practicing karate for more than 15 years. This book builds a powerful link between the art of defense and internal power. Both combined can increase significantly your strengths and predictability of the opponent intentions. Simple exercises in a matter of days will give you ability to realize your own power and the power of the opponent before engaging into sparring. In business meetings and negotiations I am able now to foster positive energy between me and negotiation side. My wife is a hillier and she loves mr. Sugiyama's exercises because she really can sense the power of "Ki" so necessary in her everyday life. We both practice by this book every morning. Thank you Sansei.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! One of Its Kind Book on Ki and Its Amazing Powers, June 5, 2000
By
This review is from: Aura, Ki & Healing (Paperback)
What really is that elusive "Ki" energy? How to develop and harness it to enrich our martial arts as well as our everyday experience? Aura, Ki & Healing, written by a karate veteran and a true teacher and educator, answers those questions through countless examples, so brilliantly illustrated and explained. The book also provides the reader with many other insights on karate, Ki-breathing and Ki-meditation, insights on collecting Ki from around us, transmitting Ki around the world and utilizing Ki to heal injuries and ailments. While the exercises from Aura, Ki & Healing supplement my karate practice, surely you do not need to be involved in martial arts to do or benefit from them. As the book makes it clear, the principles of Ki are universal: they apply equally on the martial arts floor, the golf course, shooting range, classroom or in the workplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aura, Ki & Healing can help everyone!, May 16, 2000

This review is from: Aura, Ki & Healing (Paperback)
Aura, Ki & Healing is available for all students in the many classes I teach for Rockford, Illinois' Rock Valley College Continuing Education. Students and clients of Acupressure, Holistic Pet Grooming(TM), Massage Therapy and Qigong agree with me it is a most user friendly text and are amazed at how easy Sensei Sugiyama's exercises enable ki to be seen and felt in ourselves and others.

I was privileged to attend several of his classes and successfully directed ki to push and pull others. Sensei's "sending" and "drawing from" techniques have provided much discomfort relief for my Acupressure and Massage Therapy clients.

From Japan, we in the USA are blessed to have Sensei Shojiro Sugiyama, one of the world's most respected Shoto-kan Karate Instructors. He chose to write easy to understand Ki (Japanese word for life-force energy) textbooks and share Ki training to any that wished to learn. Martial Artists learn to feel and see how an opponent's external energy (also known as aura) advertises intended attacks. Many people learned to minimize health concerns, such as arthritis, and improve quality of life, with Sensei Sugiyama's teachings. His courage and generosity continue to help many lives, this writer's included.

Sensei Sugiyama and his students teach hundreds of children to have good self-esteem, goals and high values to protect themselves and others. These extraordinary teachers have shared their training for decades. Like waves, their knowledge of Ki awareness and how to improve health with Ki training is rippling out to countless numbers of people. Some of them will proceed to share the wisdom of Ki. Thousands of lives are safer and healthier, all from one man having the courage to share.

One of his students arranged for me to teach youngsters attending a Rockford Suzuki Music Camp about Ki. The second day, an 8-year-old, and his friend asked if Ki had color? They already were seeing it! The other teachers encouraged the children to see and feel their energy. The students were exceptionally gifted, some even preparing to perform at Carnegie Hall. What impact did that week have on those children and others that they interact with? Aura, Ki and Healing provides great interactive exercises for families to have fun practicing together, while at the same time improving their health!

5.0 out of 5 stars It really did change my life...., June 21, 2002
This review is from: Aura, Ki & Healing (Paperback)
Encouraged by the reviews of the book, upon purchase and brief study, I say that it would be the most valuable book in the library of a martial artist. To read this book, you need 1)A bit of patience, and 2)An open mind and not a slave to the controversial Science of today

To me, Sensei Sugiyama will be one of the fathers of Karate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aura, Ki & Healing, May 16, 2000
This review is from: Aura, Ki & Healing (Paperback)
I would like to strongly recommend Shojiro Sugiyama's book Aura, Ki & Healing. It lays out the fundamental concepts of Ki in a clear an concise manner. Unlike other books on the topic, there is a balance between the internal (nai-ki) and external (gai-ki) applications of Ki. I believe that Mr. Sugiyama benefits from both experience and much research into the development and uses of Ki both for martail arts and healing. The exercises he recommends really do help the student become aware of their own energy and the energy of others. I would like to recommend this book to anyone looking for information on how to develop their own sensitivity to Ki. Those for whom Ki is a new or otherwise dubious subject, this book will challenge the them to maintain an open mind as they explore the possibilties of a very long held tradition in Chinese and Japanese culture.

It's amazing to read this Amazon's edition of such a readable book!. Sugiyama Sensei has the uncommon capacity to fill the gap between the Occidental and Oriental ways of thinking, the former more prone to scientific explanations, the latter more proclive to accept knowledge based on empirical data.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ki Push, June 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Aura, Ki & Healing (Paperback)
I think most people want this result the quickest. I am only 13 years old and i was able to complete this move. I think of my ki push as just something to reassure my confidence of ki. I tried this on my brother, and he started leaning back until he fell over (I haven't gotten the push very strong...yet). Then he tried it on me. Man, the push feels so weird that you can't stop smiling, it's awsome. Overall i think this book is very good for everybody.
