I've been washing my mat in the tub with Dr.Bronner's peppermint soap and a scrubbie, and hanging over a rack dryer till dry. Still smelly... and how could that possibly be true! My next step was to chuck it in the washer. Then I was reading about mat wash products and I thought it sounded a big waste of money. But I had to do something to un-funkify the thing.

I have an Aurorae rosin bag so I thought I'd give their mat wash a try before I resorted to the washer. I had to spray my mat twice and scrub it down with a cloth. That cloth was really brown from all the grime I rubbed out, probably all that rosin I use. E[...]

My mat is now soft and clean and smells wonderful. I thought it might be sticky or greasy after the wash but it's not. Now I don't have to risk sticking the mat in the washing machine. I said this in a review of their rosin, I trust the products this company makes. And when my mat goes, I will be getting one of theirs to replace it.

I had received an Aurorae yoga mat for Christmas last year and immediately followed the instructions for putting it in my washing machine. What I didn't know was that you shouldn't use a top-loading washing machine. Unfortunately, my machine chewed up a strip on the under side of my mat. I was pretty upset because it was such a nice mat and I had ruined it. It was still usable, so I continued to use it without any trouble. I just wasn't going to wash it any more. Fastforward to last month. I had e-mailed the company asking the best way to wash my mat and explained what had happened the first time I tried to wash it. I got a response the next day from the CEO of the company apologizing for what had happened (I still believe it was my own stupidity) and wanted to see pictures of the damage (plus he gave me proper washing instructions since I didn't have a top-loading washing machine). After I sent him a couple photos, he asked me if I could send him the Amazon purchase number because he wanted to "make it right." I just assumed I was going to be getting a complimentary bottle of mat cleaner, which was more than I was expecting and was very appreciative of. Instead, they sent me a brand new mat to replace the one I had damaged! The folks at Aurorae went above and beyond my expectations (all I really wanted was instructions on how to wash my mat properly) and they have gained a lifetime customer. After receiving my new mat, I promptly bought this mat cleaner and use it after every practice. It smells great!

I've practiced yoga for many years but just started adding CorePower heated yoga....so there's a lot more sweat now. And my mat & props needed some added love. This cleaner works nicely. I also purchased the Gaiam mat cleaner as well. I don't understand the comments about it making mats slippery because mine is actually more sticky after using this wash. I have two different mats, one thinner and the other the thicker 1/4" variety....both became more sticky after using the cleaner. I can only assume that those people that had a slip problem may be doing one of the following errors: Not allowing the mat to dry (don't clean mat just prior to using the mat); Use too much of the cleaner...remember that it contains olive & coconut oil..instructions suggest dampening a small towel w/ water & spraying cleaner ONLY 3x ; Or, they own mats made of a different material. But, I had a thought.....this product seems pretty pricey for what it is. Plus if used regularly it's gonna get expensive....seems like a waste of money. So I searched online for a mat cleaning recipe and found one that works great....1c.distilled water, splash of witch hazel, 10+ drops tea tree oil and 6+ drops of one of the following essential oils: Lavender, or Eucalyptus citriodora, or any one of a number of essential oils from conifers (Spruce, Pine, Tsuga, etc.) All of those essential oils are reported to have varying degrees of cleaning/anticeptic/antibacterial/anti-viral/anti-fungal properties to give the cleaner more teeth. This recipe actually works great. However I recommend that you buy either this or the Gaiam product, because then you have a cool sprayer that is made of materials that should hold up to the mixture. Won't it be nice to have yogis coming up to you in class saying, "My... what a fresh mat you have...would you consider practicing the Happy Baby pose w/ me later?..." :)

An honest review by a clueless man (please be kind):

A while back a yoga instructor gave a pre-practice chat about keeping one's mat clean and how to do it. Unfortunately, I couldn't hear much of what she said because I was looking around the room and I think mine was the only mat that was noticeably unclean. So I took this an indirect communication, as I had never even thought about this before and I don't often work up a sweat in yoga class. I tried washing the mat with soap and water, which didn't really work. So I bought a new, dark mat. Looked good for a few months, but not so much over time, even as I kept flipping it to the cleaner looking side. I went to a yoga place that sold accessories, and they were out of cleaning cloths and referred me to Amazon. I picked the Aurorae product based on positive reviews.

I used it for the first time tonight. My first impression was that the fluid had a nice smell, not quite aromatherapy, but pleasing enough and the neighbors did not complain. I wiped the mat and it looked virtually new. About 5 minutes after application, the mat was still slightly wet, but not distractingly so, and once the practice got going I did not notice it at all. Balance was not negatively affected. This is a good product. I recommend it.
