Amazon.com Review

I have always advocated keeping a wide array of unusual and telling reference works on hand. This is one of the most chilling: it is a translation of original German records, mixed with eyewitness accounts, compiled by the former research head of the Auschwitz Museum. The memoranda and ledger entries dryly tell the horrors of industrialized, government-sanctioned, popularly supported mass murder. In a sense, this is one of the most truthful works about the 20th century. Running over 800 pages, you can slam someone who "doubts" the Holocaust happened over the head with it.

This book does not read to well. But what it lacks in readabilty, it makes up for in the supposed Normal paper-work of recording where the people go and where they come from. The part that gets me is in the cold way the Nazis recorded the almost daily trains from 1942 till 1945.Such as 890 jews,321 men & boys and 569 women & girls ariive with an RSHA transport from Holland. Following the selection 48 men & 52 women are admitted to the camp (gives their admit numbers) The other 790 people, including invalids and children, are killed in the gas chambers. I can only read a few pages a day. It is a very depressing read. I also believe it is a very importent read!!!! AUSCHWITZ RERESENTS THE APEX OF EVIL!! And this book proves it beyond a shodow of doubt! So if Original camp documents, admit lists, written orders from Hoss, orders for lab experiments, escape attempts and info brought out at postwar trials is what You are lookin for than this is your book!

This book includes no eyewitness testimonies -- it is strictly factual, basing its information on Nazi records, that is, the ones that weren't burned to hide their crimes. Danuta Czech's incredible work of sifting through the paperwork makes this an extraordinary record of the Holocaust

Auschwitz was originally opened, in 1940, for Poles. In 1942, it became a tool for the mass gassing of Jews, who were not even registered upon arrival. Among those actually incarcerated in Auschwitz I, in July 1944, there were 8,200 Jews and 3,800 Poles. (p. 664). According to the camp resistance, there were incarcerated, in several of the main camps in August 1944, a total of 18,600 Poles and 23,000 Jews. (p. 693).

Holocaust deniers have argued that it would've been impossible to mass-gas people without the perpetrators also getting killed once they vented the large gas chambers. Ironic to this, some SS men did get mildly poisoned when they failed to fully observe the stated precautions of wearing gas masks, and getting no closer to the chambers than 16 yards [15 meters], depending upon the direction of the wind. (p. 215).

Holocaust-uniqueness proponents have made much of the fact that, unlike the vast majority of arriving Jews, most arriving Poles were not gassed. But so what? Most murdered Poles perished in locations different from that of Jews, and non-Jews in Auschwitz got to die other ways. French Jew Walter Laqueur writes: "While the Jews were systematically murdered, the survival chances of the other prisoners were somewhat better--but not much. Thus, for example, of a total of 13,000 Russian prisoners of war brought to Auschwitz, only 92 were alive when the camp was shut down." (p. xvii). Multitudes of Polish children, arriving as part of the genocidal "Operation Zamosc", were not sent to the gas chambers. They were killed by cardiac injections. (p. 336).

Why wasn't gassing used more on Poles? The Germans' motivates were tactical in nature.

Danuta Czeck's book "Auschwitz Chronicles" documents when prisoners who were sent 'to the right' were registered as prisoners. Those sent to the left were immediately dispatched to the gas chambers, although they did not know this until the very last moment. With an orchestra playing, suggesting a manifestation of high German culture, they could not comprehend that such an advanced German culture and the highly organized barbaric mass murder could exist simultaneously. The German Nazis were masters of deception and tried their best to cover up the greatest mass murder in history: They failed.
