"That is very true," replied Elizabeth, "and I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine."
"Pride," observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections, "is a very common failing, I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is very common indeed; that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."
"If I were as rich as Mr. Darcy," cried a young Lucas, who came with his sisters, "I should not care how proud I was. I would keep a pack of foxhounds, and drink a bottle of wine a day."

This review is from: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. (Paperback)
This is a beautiful book with lovely illustrations, but it is not a standard size. It is about twice the size of a regular paperback, although it isn't very thick. The print is also quite small and somewhat difficult to read. Each page has two columns of print. It is a nice collector's piece, but not something you would want to throw in your bag to take to the beach.

Has an old-world feel.,
This review is from: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. (Paperback)
The illustrater, Hugh Thomson, lived from 1860 to 1920. His illustrations definitely give the book an old-world feel. It's as if you just bought the novel from a tiny little bookshop with sagging windows and the smell of ancient parchment hanging in the air.
Besides, for less than $5.00, you really can't go wrong.

This review is from: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. (Paperback)
I loved the BBC video and wanted to learn more about that time period, and how well the video adhered to the book. The book was written in that time period so it was accurate as to how people acted, dressed, their morals and what was required of them socially. It's a good read and re-read.
I'd recommend it to anyone who like to know how people lived in the nineteenth century.
