This review is from: Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory (CD-ROM)
BreakAway games used the engine to Sid Meir's _Gettysburg_ real time strategy war game to create their game "Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle" which won wargamer dot com's Award for Excellence. However the Waterloo game had one flaw, it was hard to beat the AI because your own side's troops would do nothing until each unit was directly ordered. Too many order's to give in such a huge battle.
But with the next game in this series, namely "Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory", that fault was patched and a perfect war game classic resulted, Austerlitz (unlike Waterloo)now has a fair and balanced AI and this game is winable if you play well. At wargamer dot com there is a special area called "Napoleonics Game Section" where Gary Morgan has posted his own "strategy guide" and a "Review" for this game. Inside Gary's "review" is a link to Gary's Preview" which is even better than his review or his strategy guide . Gary's preview is in fact a documented play example or after-action report detailing how to win as the French forces when playing one of the two scenarios featured in the demo version of the game, this scenario also comes in the game itself. The full game also comes with a half dozen other tutorials and a real paper manual. The demo is at wargamer dot com. Try to find a used copy of this game, it will be expensive due to its outstanding reputation among all grognards. |
