Had I written this review a month ago, it would have been 5 stars. I bought the unit four months ago and for the first three months it seemed to be running great and making enough of a difference in the air that the allergy and asthma sufferers in my home did seem to be breathing easier and experiencing less symptoms. Then one day, while cleaning the unit (I vacuum the sides once a week with the soft brush attachment to pick up large, loose particles and wipe down all hard, smooth surfaces with a soft, damp cloth) I noticed dust was accumulating on the underside of the exhaust vents. This was not normal dust settling down from the air, but dust that was being blown out from the vent with what should be purified air. I know this for two reasons: one, it was settling on the underside of a vent that constantly has air blowing out of it, and two, it was an ultra fine dust of uniform consistency and a beige color (unlike my usual housedust which is made up of different sized particles and mostly gray). This concerned me, since it was clear evidence, at least to me, that the unit was not working properly: there was a leak somewhere allowing particles to pass through and be deposited on the underside of this vent.
Since the unit is only four months old, I naturally contacted Austin and explained my concerns to them. The woman was extremely unhelpful, first she couldn't seem to understand where the dust was collecting and kept insisting that dust settling out of the air was normal. Yes, I know that. This was not normal dust settling out of the air such as I would wipe off the top of the machine and the top and face of my TV and all other household surfaces. DUH!Read more ›

I am very sensitive to chemicals. I give the HealthMate Plus credit for saving my life. With it in my home I can handle odors and chemicals from other apartments and the outside.
Mine has been thru neighbors painting, and remodeling. I did have a break down with it and the warranty was honored. They even put an emergency tag on the repair so it was repaired faster.
The newer ones are so much more quieter than the old ones. When I got mine back from the factory I was constantly putting my hand on it to see if it was running. It was just so quiet.
This is one of the first items that I recommend for a chemically sensitive person to buy.
When the box arrived all I had to do was lift the box off and plug it in. It was so well packed I was impressed.

I'd never owned anything other than those cheesy ionizers in the past, and my wife suggested getting a quality HEPA filter to use in our basement, which we suspected had some mold floating around. It's never been a very smelly basement, but never seemed quite like the rest of the house either. I installed this, and within an hour, running on high, the room smelled like NOTHING. Utterly astonishing - doesn't smell like the rug, like the sofa, like fabric softener, like mold, like oil. It smells of nothing. I'm going to get one for the bedroom. It is audible on high -- like a room fan on medium maybe, and actually creates a bit of a breeze which is nice. It is also made in the U.S.A, another astounding characteristic, since you can't seem to buy anything these days that isn't made in China. Most highly recommended. I don't know what Consumer Reports was thinking of -- none of the really high quality air filters were in their recent survey.

This is a no frills HEPA air filter in terms of its aesthetic: it's an efficiently designed rectangle, and though it's not snazzy on the outside, it's not offensive or obtrusive either.
It sits in my home office, and does its thing quite well: cleansing the air, and overall improving the living conditions in a space in which I spend entirely too much time.
I ordered this unit because I had begun to develop dust allergies in my mid-thirties and was having trouble focusing and getting work done. I noticed an improvement in the way I was feeling shortly after the unit was put into operation.
The unit, though not cheap, is a particularly reliable model and is extremely cost-effective to operate over time. As any one who has done the research can tell you, the true expense with HEPA filters is not necessarily the up-front purchase cost, but the cost of replacement filters over the course of the years. Austin's design is one they stand behind with a 5 year warranty, and a filter rated at needing replacement once every 5 years... yes, you read that right. All you need do in order to achieve this longevity is to vacuum the pre-filter every few months. This is accomplished by running a bristled vacuum wand over the outer surface grating. It's simple. It really is: set a reminder in your calendar to run the vacuum over it and you're safe.
The unit doesn't take up a lot of room, though it does produce a fair bit of sound in 2 of its 3 settings. The base setting is actually pretty quiet, but the middle and upper settings are noisy - the trade off is that at these settings it moves A LOT of air, which is what you want if you're trying to quick cleanse a room.Read more ›
