Book Description

Flying High March 20, 2007
Australia is the world's smallest continent but the world's largest island, unsurpassed in its diversity of cultures and natural wonders. Aerial photographer Klaus D. Francke invites readers to explore this vast and beautiful land through this superb collection of bird's-eye photographs that spotlight Australia's fascinating contrasts. He spent close to 200 flying hours-and countless more waiting for the wind to calm and the sun to strike the right angle-to capture the images in this book. The result is a spectacular portfolio of pictures that give us a rare glimpse of Australia's complex beauty. This book transports readers to the remote reaches of this country: from the boundless expanses of the Outback to the incomparable sapphire blue of the Great Barrier Reef. Readers experience the heat of scorching deserts dominated by rocks of bizarre shapes and otherworldy colors, dive into bountiful waterfalls and salt lakes, and encounter exotic animals and futuristic cities. They also evoke the idiosyncratic personality of each of the country's major cities, including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide, which, when viewed from above, are all the more compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Australian photos!, July 30, 2009

This review is from: Australia Flying High (Hardcover)
This is one of the smaller-in-size photo books of Australia, but with 640 pages and a photo or two on every page, it is very comprehensive. I especially love the focus on the Outback and places other than cities and coastlines, although those are included too. I am reading several books on Australian explorers, and this book really enhances those tales and puts the explorers directly in the locations I am reading about. I love looking at the camels running wild in the desert..... and the from-above photos of the outback Stations, so very alone in this amazing and varied ountryside. Australia is certainly a one-of-a-kind country/continent, and the Outback is just gorgeous. When you look at the beautiful and diverse pictures in this book you have an extraordinary sense of the explorers and what they encountered on their treks. It is a lovely book with fantastic pictures!

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment, December 30, 2007
This review is from: Australia Flying High (Hardcover)
Bought this as a follow-up to our trip 'down under' this past year. The images are nice enough, but the size of the book is just too small to do justice to the visuals. Not a good 'coffee table' book.
