GREAT BOOK FOR EARLY GRADES,
This review is from: Australia (Country Explorers) (Paperback)
My son is covering Australia for 3rd Grade and I wanted to get some books to help round out his social studies class. This book was a great resource. It was easy to read and contained lots of information that appeals to young kids.
I loved that it provided hard facts (the cultural make-up of modern day Australia, the Aborigine belief of Dreamtime, etc.) along side fun facts (Aussi speak). This book covered a little bit of everything and my son read it with great interest. It covered the beginning of colonization after it was claimed by British explorer Cook through modern times in brief yet comprehesive, easy-to-digest blurbs. It touched upon many subjects like the Australia flag, aborigines, art, immigration, school, food, movies and music. The last pages contained fast facts, glossary and recommended books and website for more information. A pronunciation guide for geography (Kakadu? Uluru?) would have made this book perfect. This was one of the best books I found for elementary school aged children.
