Book Description

July 19, 2001 0192842145 978-0192842145
This comprehensive survey uniquely covers both Aboriginal art and that of European Australians, providing a revealing examination of the interaction between the two. Painting, bark art, photography, rock art, sculpture, and the decorative arts are all fully explored to present the rich texture of Australian art traditions.

Well-known artists such as Margaret Preston, Rover Thomas, and Sidney Nolan are all discussed, as are the natural history illustrators, Aboriginal draughtsmen, and pastellists, whose work is only now being brought to light by new research. Taking the European colonization of the continent in 1788 as his starting point, Sayers highlights important issues concerning colonial art and women artists in this fascinating new story of Australian art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of Australian art, February 6, 2011
By
This review is from: Australian Art (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
Let me admit this first: This is my first book on Australian art. And it is a wonderful addition to my personal library. I did not know anything about Australian art except that Aborigines created some extensive works of practical as well as illustrative art forms, which was unfortunately changed when white men wiped their entire populations and forced them into slavery. That changed lot of their art. So did commercial interests. But except this I was not aware of Australian art. But to a person like me this is a good general introduction to the art forms from 18th century onwards. Author's style is lucid and the book is divided into readable chapters with fine illustrations to go with the text. This is a paperback edition and as the introduction mentions, it is not a comprehensive work on Australian art. It is just an overview and must be taken as such.

I recommend this book to all those who wish to understand the dynamics and style of Australian art.
