Good overview of Australian art,
By Ameer Hamza Adhia (Karachi, Pakistan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Australian Art (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
Let me admit this first: This is my first book on Australian art. And it is a wonderful addition to my personal library. I did not know anything about Australian art except that Aborigines created some extensive works of practical as well as illustrative art forms, which was unfortunately changed when white men wiped their entire populations and forced them into slavery. That changed lot of their art. So did commercial interests. But except this I was not aware of Australian art. But to a person like me this is a good general introduction to the art forms from 18th century onwards. Author's style is lucid and the book is divided into readable chapters with fine illustrations to go with the text. This is a paperback edition and as the introduction mentions, it is not a comprehensive work on Australian art. It is just an overview and must be taken as such.I recommend this book to all those who wish to understand the dynamics and style of Australian art. |
