Not what I was looking for!,
By "reddudet" (Salem, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Australian Cattle Dogs (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book is very detailed in the process of breeding and not enough as to Care, Nutrition, Behavior and Training as the Title of the book leads you to believe. It does state what your ACD needs as far as "needs a job to do" or "daily exercise" but does not give enough suggestions or examples for the reader to follow or try out. For me, this book is too generic. It says "Exercise needed" but no suggestions are given, "Nutrition" but no amounts or recommendations, and so on. The rest of the book is dedicated to the purchase and breeding. I think this book might be informative for someone thinking about buying a ACD but for someone that allready ownes a ACD this book offers very little information. But hey, the pictures are great.

Pretty good,

I have an Australian Cattle Dog myself, and this is the book that I had from the very beginning. It was pretty good, though it didn't give much info on how to deal with the Cattle Dogs large amount of energy. If you want a book on the background of the Australian Cattle dog, this is a good book, but don't get it if you are looking to solve problems.

A perfect book for the average ACD pet owner,
By A Customer
This review is from: Australian Cattle Dogs (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book is aimed at the person who owns or plans to own an Australian Cattle Dog as a household pet and companion. It thoroughly covers all aspects of care and training necessary for ACDs living in those circumstances. The book does not purport itself as a training book for professional livestock owner. Those who use this book as a companion guide find it fits the bill beautifully--Richard G. Beauchamp, author.

This is not the book it claims to be,
By Judith Williams (Helena, Montana USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Australian Cattle Dogs (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book claims to be a training manual for cattle dogs. It turns out to be a basic training manual for ANY dog owner. Nothing specific about training for herding, hand signals, etc. I plan to donate it to the public library for new dog owners; it doesn't cut it for cattle ranchers!

Really good for person thinking about purchasing an ACD.,

This review is from: Australian Cattle Dogs (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
We were thinking of buying an Australian Cattle Dog after seeing them work on a ranch while we were on vacation. The dogs are extremely smart and we liked their looks but realizing how much time and attention they needed changed our minds because of our work situation at this time. We decided to wait another year when one of us would be home at all times. This book tells about what the dog is really like and how it should be trained and treated.Lots of breed books we read only told the plus features of the breeds and not what to be careful of.

Very Useful For Us,
By Zaba9901 (Bossier City, LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Australian Cattle Dogs (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
We bought this book after we adopted a little ACD from an animal shelter in March, 2008. It gives very useful information, and is written for the owner who primarily wants them as a family pet. Probably would not be useful for people who want breeding or ranching type information. We know what to expect because the ACDs demand lots of time, but the rewards are great. Intelligence level is extremely high along with the energy level. All of our future dogs will be ACDs.

I found this book to be informative about the breed but wish it had more "how to" with regards to stopping undesirable behaviors.

Unlike many low-cost "breed" books, this one actually does have breed specific information in it. Discusses typical Heeler temperament and behavior. Plus, lots of nice photos.
