Ina Bertrand and Bill Routt write on early Australian feature films (1895-1930); Bill Routt discusses "the fairest child of the Motherland"; Felicity Collins explores the years 1930 to 1970; Tom O'Regan covers the 1970s; John Slavin examines the 1980s; and Tom O'Regan writes about the 1990s. Six shorter commentaries providing a narrative of the role of film in the broader cultural life have also been included, as well as a listing of sources for the study of film in Australia.
