Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

In late 1999, Australia committed to the country's most significant externalmilitary operation since the Vietnam War-the intervention to stem the vio-lenceand bloodshed that was unleashed following East Timor's August 1999vote to separate from Indonesia. This book addresses the conceptual basis thathas largely underscored Australian foreign and defense policy and examineshow the intervention in East Timor has had an impact on this paradigmaticframework. It analyzes the implications of the International PeacekeepingForce for East Timor (INTERFET) for Canberra's future defense and securityplanning, and assesses what this means for wider United States geostrategicinterests. This book should be of interest to policymakers concerned with defense andsecurity issues in Southeast Asia and the evolving nature of the Australia-United States alliance. The research for this study was funded by a grant from the Smith RichardsonFoundation as part of its International Security and Foreign Policy Program. This research was conducted within the International Security and DefensePolicy Center (ISDPC) of RAND's National Security Research Division (NSRD).NSRD conducts research and analysis for a broad range of clients, including theU.S. Department of Defense, allied foreign governments, the intelligencecommunity, and foundations.
