I couldn't wait to sit with Mr. Mehta's book since its arrival, as Christmas present to self, just before the holidays.

Tourism is a double-edged sword, in that in can bring revenue into communities, but can also damage fragile ecosystems and social structures. Eco-tourism, when done well, is a thoughtful and careful way to ensure environmental and social objectives are met, while still offering visitors the opportunity to visit magical and inspiring places. But it is also a buzz-word, applied to any "nature tourism" destination. Hitesh's book looks at places where ecotourism is real, and where local people and communities are both involved in, and benefit from the tourism enterprise, as well as where fragile and beautiful ecosystems and wildlife are protected and carefully managed to avoid destruction. The photography is gorgeous and the book is inspiring and thought-provoking. It will help people who want to be responsible and thoughtful in their travel...and give plenty of ideas to visitors whatever their budget. It is also, just simply, a beautiful book.... the world is such an incredible place!

This is not just a book it is AN EVENT !

After starting to read I encountered an emotion rising in myself that conveyed an urgency to continue. There was something different in the entire presentation that evidenced a rare depth of perception and understanding as if I were captured by a new discovery.

The selection of photographs and well crafted text created a sense of purpose in the respect for nature and the local community that transcends the actual words. I am usually not at a loss for words but I am almost speechless in explaining my reaction and I guess - surprise.

I am awed by Hitesh's presentation, demonstrating and explaining environmental science through actual examples, diagrams and photographs.

Truly a masterpiece and a primer for aspirants to the institution and future development of ecotourism and sustainable technology.

It is truly refreshing to read Mehta's 'Authentic Ecolodges', a wonderful book that I strongly recommend to anyone.

Being myself an ecologist I get frequently frustrated not to see enough progress on the field of sustainable, low-impact architecture. I find that, in the relatively new field of ecologically-efficient dwelling design, there is an abundance of good intentions and seemingly great ideas, which unfortunately lack practicality or are economically unsound.

Mehta's book, however, is packed with proven success histories. Each of the 36 ecolodges featured in the book should really be used as a case study by modern architecture and by governments, as an example to inspire new construction codes and regulations. Mehta's rating system to grade an ecolodge success, based on rigorous engineering analysis (structural, environmental, economical) more than just in esthetics, adds credibility to the whole project.

The most important fact l learned from 'Authentic Ecolodges' is that, as Mehta explains, ecologically aware architecture does not necessarily have to be more expensive to construct and maintain than wasteful, high-impact construction. In fact, this `smart' architecture is by definition low-maintenance, and pays for itself in the sort term.

As a sideline, I'll mention that, being myself a vegan, I was delighted (and not surprised at all) to notice that in every ecolodge described there is an emphasis on catering for cruelty-free vegan local gastronomy.

Mehta's book made me want to travel to some of the ecolodges described, which I plan to do.

Authentic Ecolodges couldn't have been published at a better time. This beautiful publication, clearly Hitesh Mehta's labor of love, talent, passion for eco tourism and photography, with its chai / coffee table format, is a must have anyone interested in - authentic architectural design ... the makings of a genuine ecolodge ... ways to support the local communities ... minimizing the impact on the environment ... or just enjoying a beautiful book with stunning photographs and alluring descriptions of Ecolodges and its surrounding environment.

For today's discerning travelers seeking new and unique experiences it makes a perfect guide to the best of the best "eco" lodges across the globe. In the same token, it is a true inspiration to new property developers portraying exemplary practice in sustainable design, operation, supported by detailed site plans, sketches, meticulous descriptions and stunning photographs. Hitesh has also devised an International Ecolodge Rating System that provide benchmarks which encompass environmental and social differences globally making it so much easier to make informed choices.

A huge token of gratitude to Hitesh from one conscientious world traveller for this beautifully presented book that will make a real difference to local communities, broaden the horizons of the travelers, educating the planners on the "eco" sustainable designs and for providing me with many ecolodges that I will one day visit ... A resource that was worth waiting for!
