This 1938 book contains librettos to all but the first three Wagner operas; Die Feen, Das Liebesverbot, and Rienzi are not included.

Some are not contemporary with the book. For instance, the Meistersinger libretto was published in 1889 (a mere 21 years after the opera's debut!); the Rheingold libretto in 1904.

The librettos contain cuts; they are *not* complete. The librettos for Flying Dutchman, Tannhauser, and Parsifal are not too bad. But the Lohengrin libretto contains some very large cuts in Act 3. And the Meistersinger libretto is riddled with so many cuts, it is nearly unusable.

In addition, the German text does not always match what the singers are actually singing. You have to be very attentive when following the words so you don't lose your place.

The English translations are adequate but use very archaic language ("The holy tears adown my cheek are stealing!").

Each libretto contains a story summary, plus music for the major arias.

If you want to buy this book, don't spend a lot of money on it. I bought it for only $5.39, so for that price, I can tolerate the shortcomings.

The text includes German and English renderings of the librettos oof all ten of Wagnwe's major operas. The translations are not new, and they are in rhymed verse, but these attributes add to the charm of the work. I did not realize (probably didn't read carefully) the age of the book, but it has what I wanted, and it has it in a delightful composition. The book arrived in excellent shape (I'm no expert on the preferred terms for used books), and it arrived quickly. What could I not love about this purchase?
