The Real Deal,
By A Customer
This review is from: Authentic Native American Music (Audio CD)
If anyone has ever wondered what kind of music they might have at a Pow Wow, this is it. This is the authentic, 'hardcore' stuff. You can listen to this drumming and chanting and simply lose yourself in it. It will carry you away. Only if you were at an actual ceremony would it be more authentic. It is beautiful to listen to and wonderful to imagine to. Let your heart soar with the eagles.

Old but authentic,

I used to have an audiotape with many of these songs on it which I got 20 years ago. I think these songs might have been originally recorded on wax cylinders, hence the scratchy quality. The songs are old, maybe from around 1900 to 1930s. These songs are not like the ones you will find at modern powwows today but are a rare collection of the old-time songs from another era. Geared more toward the serious student rather than the casual listener. For powwow music, I would recommend any of the more modern releases.

Not recommended - Don't Buy,

Horrible cover photo. The stereotypical "NobleSavage". I bought this CD primarily out of curiosity because it was so cheap. I think I understand why it's such a bargain. The music itself is okay, all traditional songs of various nations (this is not the type of music usually heard at powwows. Those looking for that will be greatly disappointed). I suppose the title is accurate: "Authentic Native Amer. Music" since the songs are definitely "Native Amer." However, my main complaint is the lack of liner notes. The song list is exactly as noted above, no names of groups or individuals or even when the recordings were made. It makes me question if the songs are correctly identified by tribal affiliation. The quality of the CD is poor. Most likely these songs were "reproduced" from old recordings with the intention of making a fast buck. Don't waste your money on this. Use it to buy the many other high quality CD's produced by Native Amer. artists.

Why you should definitely buy this CD in 1000 words or less,
This review is from: Authentic Native American Music (Audio CD)
I bought the CD a couple years ago, not on-line, because I wascurious. I was shocked. The music isnothing like what the general public is spoon fed for mass consumption. Yes, it is true that the cover liner has almost no information, but I'm sure some intrepid reviewer who doesn't like that fact can do us all some good and look up whether the tribal affiliations listed are accurate or not. Nevertheless, the music is wonderful. The sound quality is not your typical CD quality, but it is good enough, and gives a sort of down home feel. Anybody who thinks the CD should be avoided because of the lack of liner notes needs to buck up and just enjoy the music. Above all, enjoy the music. It is certainly authentic, and compelling. The melodies are riveting, the Pawnee Hand Game Song, is hypnotic, the Navajo Hoop Dance is gives beautiful inflections, and the Shawnee Stomp Dance is an interplay of dueling voices that makes the CD worth every penny, and that is true even if it happened to turn out that the song is for a Seminole Gift ceremony or a Mongolian BBQ. Please don't get me wrong, I personally think the tribal affiliations are probably accurate, the lack of Liner Notes does not mean that the furnished info is incorrect. Just suspect. I hope someone will do the research, if someone has the time.

Might be worth the money...,

Poor sound quality on many tracks, but for the price, ok as a very general introduction to traditional American Indian music. This CD -- with the same songs in exactly the same order -- was released a few years back by the Legacy International label as "Authentic Music of the American Indian".

Unless you are willing to put up with poor sound quality - do not purchase this CD. I returned it immediately as my HiFi reproduced the CD 'as is' - including the poor quality recording. It was not pleasing to the ears.
I highly recommend Sacred Spirit, Vol. 2: More Chants and Dances of the Native Americans and Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans. I have not got over them yet and I consider them the finest of Native American music. I purchased them at the Grand Canyon during our tour of the USA. They are currently in promotion at Amazon.(Discounted price).

These recordings were probably recorded without permission; hence, the lack of named singers and inappropiately named songs. There is a mixture of traditional pow wow and competion pow wow songs (not to mention the inappropiate recording of ceremonial songs) on this cd. The poor recorded tracks speaks for themselves that they are most likely unlawfully recorded.
