beautiful book, beautiful pictures of Filipino food,
By
This review is from: Authentic Recipes from the Philippines (Authentic Recipes Series) (Hardcover)
I'm not sure what the other reviewer meant by the book not covering traditional Filipino food he's known. This was lovingly put together by Philippine-born Filipinos famous for their work in documenting authentic Filipino cuisine... very unlike other cookbooks whose writers only parachute into the country, if at all, and compile recipes for publication.
True, it's not a typical cookbook that focuses solely on recipes. The first ten or so pages are essays. Its value is not only in the beautiful photographs, but also in the substantial background it provides for Filipino food. What a deal at $12! You can preview the book above with Amazon's "Search inside this book" feature. The reviews of the edition that came out in 1999 are here: The Food of the Philippines: Authentic Recipes from the Pearl of the Orient.

more of a coffee table book,

I purchased this book mainly as a resource for Filipino food. The book has a very apealing layout but if you're looking for a cookbok, this is not the one. This is more of a coffee table book. I was disappointed with the recipe selection because most of them are pretty "entry level" recipes.

this filipino cookbook is one of my favorites. you will find the most popular filipino recipes. my only regret is that more recipes were not included. that is probably because the high quality of the book, beautiful color photos, high quality paper, hardcover, etc. is very reasonably priced. a great gift or addition to any asian cookbook collection. especially great for those interested in filipino cooking

essentially the same as "the food of the Philippines",

If you like periplus cookbooks and already own "the food of" version of this book, then reconsider buying this one. The new "authentic recipes from" series is just a rehash of the "food of series" with a few subtle changes such as relacing obscure recipes with more recognisable ones, bigger font and format, less on the history and some updated pictures. Overall I kind of like the recipes in the new books more as there is less filler and odd recipes, but I do like the layout and format of the older hardcover "food of" books. So if you own "the food of" and want to get this book, be prepared to sell it off as you will only end up doubling up 90% of recipes between the 2.

I know there are Philippino restaurants outside of the Philippines but I have yet to encounter one. I have several cookbooks that include recipes from the Phillipines but this is the first book I have purchased which is dedicated to the topic and I very much enjoyed reading all the introductory material at the beginning. The photography is excellent and the recipes very interesting. I have only tried a couple so far but I love browsing through them.

Not only is the recipies not very authentic, but they require so much and take a long time to make. I understand it not going to be fast, but it is unreal.

I think people are better off asking around for recipes. This book definitely did not cover the traditional Filipino food I've learned to know.
