5.0 out of 5 stars The power of your voice, January 18, 2008

This review is from: Authentic Voices, Authentic Singing: A Multicultural Approach to Vocal Music Therapy (Paperback)
This book is a must-have for every music therapist, as well as students and practitioners in psychology. One tends to forget that the human voice is our primary communication instrument, yet we hardly make use of its capacity to communicate who we are, as individuals. Not that everyone must become a trained "singer", but that we can understand how the use of our own voices for 'healing' can actually change us for the better. We shout, we call out, we whisper... but do we vocalize for our own well being?

Book takes us on a journey to cultures in which vocalization is predominent (chanting, etc) through the use of the 'natural' voice. The book also provides us with exercises we might undertake to explore our own natural voice, as individuals, as clinicians, alone or in groups, to release built-in tensions and anxieties, and sometimes to share in a communal experience without the need of vocal training or other instruments.

A must-have book for all music therapists, as well as psychologists, medical and mental health professionals, and persons interested in understanding how the voice can help overcome physical and emotional distress.
