Biography

Consisting of rapper/singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. Editorial Reviews

Picking up where their 2008 Grammy-nominated Leave It All Behind left off, Authenticity is the group's most diverse work to date, with a tight, 11-track song cycle spanning the duo's trademark brand of lush electronic soul, to stripped down acoustic pieces that recall the heyday of 70's singer/songwriter driven Folk. Lead single "Maybe She'll Dream Of Me" is a playful, synth-driven hip-hop groove featuring a rapped verse from Phonte that evokes the band's "Connected" era, while the epic opener "The Last Fall" finds Phonte singing some of his most cynical lyrics to date over a frenzied Nicolay production jammed with layers of strings, guitars, and dense choral harmonies.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love it but I hate it October 16, 2010
By Sinamen
Format:Audio CD
The album is good, it has great beats and melodies. However, the only thing that is driving me crazy is the loss of the strong hip-hop element they had with Connected, even in Leave it All Behind. This reads as an R&B album to me. I like it but as im listening I just want Phonte to spit a verse, or give me spoken lyrics. I fell in love with them because they werent just rap and not just r&b, they had the perfect combination over some really great beats.
