Headhunters live - Hearing and seeing is believing,
By
This review is from: Authorized Bootleg: Live - Agara Ballroom - Cleveland, Ohio May - 13 1990 (Audio CD)
I have seen the Kentucky Headhunters 7 times. The first time was a few months before this compact disc was recorded. They were third on the bill after headliner Steve Earle and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Steve played a wonderful solo acoustic set and Mary did her usual fine country/folk/rock set. Then the Heads came on and something very strange happened:they played and people walked out. The sheer volume and intensity of the performance and their physical appearance shocked the audience. I stayed until the end, then nervously asked a friend his opinion of them. He really didn't have an answer. Well, I then declared that they were great!A couple of months later I bought "Picking On Nashville" and was really surprised that it was the Number One album on the "Country" music charts. The Headhunters are not a "Country" band: they mostly play rock and blues with a bit of country thrown in. And they can play!!! Lead guitarist Greg Martin and drummer Fred Young are highly regarded instrumentalists. I have read several articles in musician magazines, for example Guitar World, recognizing their chops. This compact disc documents the Headhunters superb musicianship. The recording itself is very clear, punchy and detailed. The instruments and vocals are well separated in the mix. A great job of mixing and mastering! ( A couple of their previous compact discs, for example "Rave On" were poorly mixed and mastered} Musical highlights include Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" which features a drum solo and several numbers from "Picking On Nashville" Anyway if The Kentucky Headhunters come to your town - check them out - You will enjoy a evening of high energy musicmaking.

Finally!,

Finally a KYHH BootLeg! Love it! My only complaint about this cd would be, that I WASNT in Cleveland when it was recorded! Being at a KYHH concert is an amazing thing in itself, but to have an actual one recorded onto a cd is way overdue.I do love their newer music, which obviously isn't found on this cd, but there is always room for another one, to showcase the beautiful solo sounds of Doug Phelps. I also love to hear Richard rock out on vocals with his own unique style. Now...let's work on that live Bootleg DVD, featuring the current line-up! GREAT CD!!! Worth every penny!!!!

The Heads at their Best ....Live!,
This review is from: Authorized Bootleg: Live - Agara Ballroom - Cleveland, Ohio May - 13 1990 (Audio CD)
It's a shame The Kentucky Headhunters didn't stay with this, their original line-up. The songs sound as fresh and as fun as the did back when their debut album came out. The "live" sound may not be as perfect as a lot of live albums before and since, but it's not all that bad either. The songs such as "Crossroads", "She's About A Mover" and "Dizzie Miss Lizzie" are an added bonus and fit right in with the entire set very well. If you're a KY Head fan or just enjoyed the hell out of the first few KY Head albums, this CD is a definite must!
