The four didn't coalesce into a group until the late `70s when they backed the famed New Orleans "Indian" group The Wild Tchoupitoulas on tour. The brothers then gained further notice as the "don't miss" act performing nightly at N'Orleans' Tipitinas. The Brothers finally were recorded in 1978, but it wasn't till March of 1989, when their Yellow Moon album was released by A&M, that the group truly asserted itself nationally.
Recorded on the eve of Yellow Moon's release, this double CD showcases the joyous breadth and depth of the Neville Brothers music. From N'Orleans street funk ("Fiyo On The Bayou") to soulful, spiritual balladry ("Amazing Grace"), from a `50s rock `n' roll medley to a gorgeous Bob Marley cover, the Brothers put their unique stamp on a veritable musical smorgasbord. It's probably as close as we're ever going to get to an American music revue from the perspective of the one and only Big Easy.

One of The Best live Bands Ever,

This review is from: Authorized Bootleg Warfield Theatre San Francisco (Audio CD)
If you never saw or heard the Neville Briothers live, I feel sorry for you. Without question this band could make a stone statue get up and dance, thats how good this group plays and sounds. I have had the good fortune to see the Nevilles many times on their own and as an opening act for Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett, Ziggy Marley and Robert Cray. They never failed to deliver a wonderful blend of funk, blues, jazz, rock and New Orleans R and B and make it sound so joyous. The brothers have been around for a long time and this 1989 Official Bootleg captures them at their best. The opening salvo of " Fire On the Bayou" and " Hey Pocky Way" will have you jumping up and down. This is like getting a free trip to the Big Easy on a Saturday night.
Not only does the band have the wonderous voice of Aaron Neville but Brother Art on keyboards, Charles on saxophone and Cyril on percussion along with a cracker jack backing band that includes the incredible Willie Green on drums and the ever tasteful Brian Stoltz on Guitar. They cook on the song " Voodoo" and Aaron's composition " Yellow Moon" . Disc One ends with Aaron's 1966 smash " Tell It Like It Is" and a smoking instrumental jam. They can do it all. Disc two burns with the definitive New Orleans jam of " Brother John, Iko, Iko, Do you want to Dance and Day-O". Whew! Then they hit you up with a medley of 1950 rockers going from " Johnny B. Goode" to " Long Tall Sally' The show ends with Aaron singing his heart out on " Amazing Grace and a gorgeous cover of Bob Marley's " One Love". Why this band never achieved the audience and recognition it deserved is beyond me, but if you want to experience a joyous evening of music captured on CD. This is one you should hear. If you are already a fan you will love it. If you never heard of the Nevilles you will be in for a unique surprise.
