5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to understand the autistic perspective, read it!, April 10, 1999
Autism: Handle with Care is a well written manual for understanding the autistic person in one's home or classroom. Gail Gillingham quotes autistic individuals as they explain what autism is. She addresses sensory sensitivities in a simple, concise manner helping the reader to understand the important perceptual differences autistic people have. She gives practical advice and helps to dispel many of the myths surrounding the autism diagnosis. Gail Gillingham asks the reader to begin to respectfully listen to what autistic persons have to say, for they are the ones experiencing the effects of autism and are, therefore, the experts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for parents and teachers of autistic people, February 12, 1999
This book tops my list of "must reads" for autism information. (this one ranks up there with Temple Grandin's Thinking in Pictures and Stanley Greenspan's The Child With Special Needs) It covers the different sensory issues in great detail, learning styles, communication difficulties and so much more. I've found a wealth of information from different therapies to actual autistic people explaining how they see life and how they learn best... Every parent of an autistic person should read this book, from cover to cover. It'll give you support to act on your feeling that a real, thinking, feeling person is inside your child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Autism Handle With Care, October 19, 2000
This book is a must have for the parent or therapist who is searching to solve some of the mysteries of Autism. As a social worker for children and adults with disabilities I have recommended this book to many people. It is absolutely the best book I have read that gives insight into the confusing world of autism. It gives first person accounts of what it feels like to be autistic and encounter the world. It gives excellent insight on ways to provide treatment to someone with autism to avoid over stimulation.
