I have twins on the autistic spectrum in Kindergarten and based on the title of this book I thought some of the ideas would be helpful. I found instead that all the suggestions offered were not only things I had already done with my children but way below their level. This book would have been a wonderful tool when they were 2 years old, however I found nothing appropriate for my kindergarten aged children!

Elizabeth Burton Scott and Lynne Gillis have created an excellent guide for parents, teachers and therapists. Their newly published 2010 Autism Recovery Manual of Skills and Drills is a must edition for at home and at school one on one play therapy. Not only does this manual present countless fun educational activities but explains how the play activity develops and improves the child participating. I highly recommend this welcome sequel to Elizabeth Burton Scott's book, Raindrops on Roman, Overcoming Autism, A message of Hope. It is most beneficial to all pre-school children especially those on the autism spectrum.

This review is from: Autism Recovery Manual of Skills and Drills: A Preschool and Kindergarten Education Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Therapists (Paperback)
In this follow-up to the best-selling Raindrops on Roman, Elizabeth Burton Scott and OT Lynn Gillis go into detail about how Mrs. Scott helped her son to recover from many symptoms of autism and instruct the readers on how to engage their children. Their approach is brilliant in its simplicity: Drop everything! Hug your kids! Play with them! Give them real toys! Give yourself a break and don't forget to pray! Do not allow them to lose themselves in television and electronic games! While this is good advice for any parent, it is absolutely crucial for the parent of a child with autism. We don't just bring our children into the world on the day they're born; it's a process, and this is especially true for a child on the autism spectrum. Every day is a day that can be spent bringing your child into our world and helping him learn to function in it. We cannot squander the gift of a day, especially when our children are young and developing rapidly.

RADICALLY IMPROVE The Life Of Your Child, Creating NEW HOPE,

Elizabeth Scott has done the most amazing job of sharing her success story in curing her son's autism. It's most striking because it's personal and professional. Her teaching background and her co-author's occupational therapy expertise have been the two critical ingredients for expaining and proving that specific skills and drills for treating autism are succeeding. It's understandable (& important) that "critics" absorb this scientific breakthrough with caution. The skills and drills and THE AMOUNT OF TIME that was spent spent with Roman to re-wire his brain patterning has never been done and documented so closely.
It's an outstanding tool for parents to use with their toddler or young child with autism to help with their language development, fine, gross and sonsory motor skills. It is vital to teach these children how to sit, focus and learn. This program is easy to implement too. The more subtle aspect of the book is that Eliabeth is inspiring and excited in her expanations. This helps parents to create new hope for their child and to balance keeping their expectations realisitc yet very HIGH regarding what their child is capable of achieving. I have seen Elizabeth and Roman on Good Morning America, heard Elizabeth speak on WBUR in Boston and read many reviews, including The Boston Globe and The Chicago Tribune. I have bought several copies of the book to give to friends and colleagues that have children with autism, sensory deprivation and even ADHD/ADD. These skills and drills work. They can also be adapted to help improve the learning capacity of older children and even adults. I completely respect and understand the critics viewpoint. At the same time, I strongly encourage all readers to BE OPEN-MINDED that it is possible to treat, improve and even cure autism. READ THIS MANUAL, along with RAINDROPS ON ROMAN and keep your expectations HIGH! Jane Polley

This book is a wonderful guide in working with and for Autistic children. I have taught elementary school for thirty years and this book would have been a great asset. With Autism, early intervention is key. This book clearly and precisely guides you through all the necessary and timely skills which children need to develop and learn. It is a very educational, practical and rewarding book and should be shared by all who work with Autistic children. It can also be used for any preschool child to help to prepare them for Kindergarten. Sincerely, Elizabeth M Hartwell

After seeing Elizabeth Scott and her son Roman on Good Morning America I was excited to get her manual of Skills and Drills. It is a very practical and easy guide for children with autism and is an excellent early learning program for any child. It has so many great ideas that I can use with my four year old to help him to sit and focus on a variety of tasks while preparing him for Kindergarten. Now I am teaching him letters, letter sounds, numbers and shapes, along with many other concept skills.
It's amazing what he can learn while doing some of our daily rountines such as bath time. I loved the suggested activities such as flash cards for the tub and having him spell out his name and drawing letters while taking a bath. To know that her son has recovered from autism, using these skills and drills is just so encouraging to me! I sincerely recommend this wonderful resource guide for all preschool children.

I am the mother of a toddler who receives Early Intervention Services for sensory issues. I liked the Sensory Skills section of the manual for ideas and suggestions to do with my child at home. It is user friendly, with simple to follow activities. I'm going to try some of the other skill area suggestions too just for fun!
I found this book to be extremely helpful and easy to apply. I have also shared these suggestions with several other parents who have purchased the book after reviewing mine. I highly reccomend this.

I am a special education teacher working with children on the spectrum ages 6-8. I bought this manual in the hopes that it would provide me with new ideas on how to work with the lower functioning ASD child. What I love about this book is that the skills and drills can be followed as they are or adjusted for individual need. It has been a wonderful resource for my classroom!

I am a working mother of two children. I was searching for skills and exercises that could help my five year old son with language and fine motor skill delays, without much success. Mrs. Scott's manual offered practical and effective exercises that allow me to help my child succeed in these areas. With a demanding job, I'm still able to complete many of these skills and drills with my children. This manual has enabled me to go directly to the subject areas that best address my son's needs. The exercises have not only helped my son, but also my three year old daughter, who does not have any learning delays. She's in advanced preschool program and these exercises are helping her to further excel.
I've gone from feeling helpless to hopeful and I now know tangible, practical ways to help my children be successful and get the maximum impact of our family time together. I'd recommend this book to any parent of preschool or kindergarten-aged children!

I am a college student majoring in elementary and special education. I am preparing to start home based services for a six year old non-verbal child with autism. I found this book full of useful suggestions and activities to use with him. I particularly learned valuable information from the overview section on how to organize my treatment sessions. The book is easy to understand with simple to follow directions that gives me the confidence to start work in my future profession. I also liked the illustrations and pictures of activity items for all the skills and drills. This is a great resource book and the price is very reasonable!
