Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an exhaustive look at a topic that has received a lot of attention lately. There are literally hundreds of references/suggested readings for further research. The book contains helpful tables and figures, including eight pages (front and back) of colorful, glossy pictures. It is a book that researchers and clinicians should have in their libraries." -- Doody's

If you are able to read scientific papers, buy this textbook to get a comprehensive overview of autism research as of 2011. If you like to understand in depth and know what's really known and unknown about autism (as of 2011), this book is great.

It is an enormous 1400-page book, essentially a collection of review papers. Chapters are contributed by experts in a given area of autism research and summarize a research area or topic. A number of different angles of research are included (neurological, biological, clinical, etc.) so you get an interdisciplinary picture.

One note, especially the neurology papers can be grating with the use of terms such as "deficiency" or "underdeveloped" when the evidence may not support the implied judgment. It is not scientific to assume that all differences correlated with autism are pathological; some may be correlated but not cause trouble by themselves, while others may be more like a tradeoff than a straightforward negative. Sloppy science to use value-judgment language here.

But that criticism applies to autism research as a whole, which this book merely reflects. I learned tons of interesting things about autism by plowing through the book.

It's easy to skip chapters on research topics that aren't of interest for whatever reason. I probably read about 2/3 of the book.

There are a total of 81 chapters organized into 11 categories. The 11 categories are "historical perspective, diagnosis and classification, and epidemiology"; "core features and developmental trajectories"; "psychiatric and medical comorbidities"; "broader autism phenotype"; "neurobiology"; "etiology: genetics"; "etiology: environmental factors"; "animal models and theoretical perspectives"; "treatment approaches"; "best practices in the diagnosis and treatment"; and "public policy".

I am a graduate student studying autism. This field was new to me, and I needed a good book that was up-to-date and covered all aspects of autism. This book fulfilled my needs and expectations. It covers all the scientific aspects of autism, for example, from developmental, cognitive, and pharmacological approach to animal models in basic research. Each chapter provides a good review on the focused areas, and it also lists references if you want to learn them in depths. The targeted audience of this book is professionals and scientists involved in autism studies, I believe, and not for general public education.
