Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

An internationally known authority in the field and the author of some landmark studies on autism, Wing is also the mother of an autistic child. This allows her to blend clinical knowledge with practical, everyday guidance. Particularly useful is the "Ways of Helping" section, which addresses common problems and offers functional advice on how to address them. While the depth of information here may be overwhelming to the parents of a newly diagnosed child (a better choice for that audience is Michael D. Powers's Children with Autism: A Parent's Guide, Woodbine House, 2000. 2d ed.), it is an excellent choice for those who require a text with more substance. It should prove especially useful to parents of a child whose educational program is not working as well as it should. Further, educators and allied health professionals will find it a valuable tool. A substantial addition to consumer health or education collections. KellyJo Houtz Griffin, Eatonville, WA

This review is from: The Autistic Spectrum: A Parents' Guide to Understanding and Helping Your Child (Paperback)
This is an excellent & up-to-date, no-nonsense book for parents of kids on the spectrum. I have found it to be easy to read, informative and helpful. I bought it because it was recommended by a doctor that knew I was confused by my son's behavior. It has helped me probably more than the other books I have on the subject.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, January 30, 2002

This review is from: The Autistic Spectrum: A Parents' Guide to Understanding and Helping Your Child (Paperback)
Being the mother of an autistic daughter, I have read a few books on the subject. This book was much too clinical to the parent who basically wants to know what is happening to their child. I have read other books which talk on this subject in language which is easier to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, November 22, 2003

This review is from: The Autistic Spectrum: A Parents' Guide to Understanding and Helping Your Child (Paperback)
This unpretentious work provides a wealth of information useful in the differential diagnosis and treatment of children with autistic spectrum disorders. One of it's strengths lies in the author's simple description of the range of behaviors and behavioral patterns associated with autism in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. While some parents may find sections of this book too "clinical," mental health practitioners who work with children will find this book to be a valuable addition to their library.
