4.0 out of 5 stars There are NO shortcuts!
I've purchased 3 books on car detailing (and one video), and this book is by far the best reference I've found. As another reviewer mentions, the process is time-consuming - it's meant to be. To thoroughly clean a car requires time, patience, and an attention to detail. It would easily take a week to clean a car using all the methods described, which is a lot of time. The...

2.0 out of 5 stars Old detailing techniques, no new ideas or shortcuts
Mr. Jacobs apparently has been detailing automobiles for some time. The problem is, his techniques are laborious and time consuming. I have shown concours quality automobiles for many years and am still waiting for a book with fresh new "Insider" detail secrets...the wait continues.

The results would also be worth it.

Of course, you don't have to use everything in the book. If you're not a concours competitor, car show participant, or professional detailer, the value of the book lies in it's ability to help you tackle whatever problem area you have. Getting the scuff marks from the leather in my '66 Rolls-Royce or cleaning its grill have always been problems for me, as well as the deck lid vent on my '83 Porsche. The techniques in the book helped me solve those problems. I've also always been a lousy wax-man, until this book. The information is tried and true, most of it will make you wonder why it didn't occur to you in the first place! By far, the best detailing information source I've found.

The downside, and this seems to happen with all these books, is the dated product references. The 2nd ed. is 8 years old, and some items mentioned have since fallen out of favor (Armor All) or aren't areadily available ;in every case, a substitute is readily available. The value is in the techniques themselves, not the product listings. I've no doubt that this book's influence will have me attempting a concours event in the future.
