First, a little history-
I've been using Windows based AutoCad LT in my design business for 12 years on a daily basis. I'm an industrial designer who only needs the basics of CAD to engineer 2D drawings. AutoCAD is the standard for design businesses, engineers, draftsmen, and production factories. I transitioned from doing all of my engineering drawings by hand on huge drafting tables to computers around 1999-2000. AutoCAD drastically increased my productivity and helped me turn a 2 man business into a very successful multi-employee design firm. My business CANNOT run without CAD.
Very recently, I made the decision to finally switch all of my computers from PC to Mac, I don't need to explain the many reasons for the switch, but if you're an artist or designer you understand. In regards to this review, the one important reason for the switch was the announcement that Autodesk finally designed a stable stand-alone version of CAD LT for Macs. The previous version (before LT 2013) was full of bugs and received terrible reviews from Mac users and designers. The wait was finally over and I pulled the trigger, making a sizeable investment in hardware and software.

I've been using 2013 LT on my imac and macbook pro for 2 weeks....... and I'm severly disappointed! Anybody who has ever used AutoCAD is used to the program layout, the function of the menus, the organization of the program, the customization ability to only display the tools you need in the locations you want. AutoCAD LT 2013 for Mac gives you NONE of these familiar properties. The program looks beautiful and slick but they succeded in creating a new version of CAD that will drive you absolutly crazy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, AutoCAD done right for Mac. July 25, 2012
Platform for Display:Mac Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Because AutoCAD has long been a Windows program, I was a little dubious about it being ported to Mac, so I continued to run the Windows version on my Mac using Parallels Desktop when I finally left the Windows environment for good. A friend raved about the Mac version, and convinced me that, unlike previous Mac versions of AutoCAD, THIS one was actually done right. He was right.

I have new-found respect for Autodesk in their release of this Mac version. It's not a "port over" --it's literally built from the ground up expressly for the Mac, and looks like it was created by engineers who really, really are sold on the Mac and it's considerable advantages over the Windows environment. It's a vast improvement over previous Mac editions of this product. Keep in mind this is the "light" version and, as such, is a 2D program, not capable of 3D work like the full version. That said, files from all versions are interchangeable, so work you begin in the LT version can be taken to the next level in the full version.

No doubt, the AutoCAD programs are the Rolls-Royce of the category. If you just want to draw things, you're using Corel Draw. If you want to design things, you're using AutoCAD. Yes, even this light version is expensive, and the full version comes with full-blown sticker shock, but if you're a professional in this industry, you can't afford not to be using AutoCAD, and now that it's newly created for the Mac, and has just as much power if not more than the Windows version, you'll find this to be a solid performer worthy of the investment.

I would heartily recommend this version to anyone working at the level that requires this sophisticated of a program.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware June 22, 2012
Platform for Display:Mac Disc|Verified Purchase
Recently paid about $900 for Auto CAD LT. I had last used AutoCAD eight years ago. Have since switched from Microsoft to Apple. Rather than buy a Windows machine to do some recent 2D CAD work, I bought AutoCAD LT for Mac. Big Mistake. The program is a bug-infested piece of garbage. At one point today while in AutoCAD my computer froze up. Nothing I could do from the keyboard could unfreeze it so I turned off my computer and rebooted. When I got the program back up I had lost everything back to the point I had last saved it, so two hours work went right down the drain. Since switching to Apple products I had gotten out of the habit of saving my work every few minutes. This is just one of 10 or more major problems I have experienced.

Documentation is almost nil. Bought AutoCAD LT 2012 and AutoCAD 2013 Essentials (Official Autodesk training guides). Worthless if you are working on a Mac. Bought Mastering AutoCAD for Mac. Worthless you are using AutoCAD LT and it was written back in 2011. $100 down the drain. A third-party book I had purchased 12 years ago was more help than any of the current Autodesk material.

The on-screen Help function is a joke. Doesn't cover key commands. Try using Help to find "object snap".

I get the strong feeling that Auto Desk doesn't need Mac users and man they expect the same.

I also get the feeling this program is running on a marginal emulator package and has not really been ported to Mac. Can't prove it, but there is often a delay of a few seconds between the time I key a command and it is executed.

I could go on, but what is the point. There have to be better CAD programs for Mac out there. I intend to find one. This has really been a case of throwing good money after bad and I can't understand why this software is so highly rated.

PS After this review was published, I noticed that it was the only review by a person who actually purchased the software.
