Book Description

August 15, 2003
For courses in Interior Design, Space Planning, Computer-Aided Design, Computer Graphics and Architectural Graphics. This manual teaches users how to make architectural drawings using a computer and the AutoCAD 2004 program. This easy-to-understand book employs the prompt-response format in beginning exercises of all chapters to allow users to learn commands in a drawing situation. The text then provides exercises so users can apply the commands on their own. New features of AutoCAD Release 2004 are described-e.g.: redesigned AutoCAD Design Center, modeless dialog boxes, new gradient hatch patterns for rendering isometric and two-dimensional drawings, and easy printing and plotting of 3-D rendered models.

AutOCAD® has become the industry standard graphics program for interior design and space planning; it is used to complete the many drawings that make up a design project. Many design firms have adopted AutoCAD as their standard because

  • it saves time,
  • affiliated professions use it, and these firms need to be able to exchange disks in order to work on the same drawing,
  • their competitors are using it, and
  • their clients expect it.

To be successful in design today; students must be proficient in the use of AutoCAD as it relates to interior design and space planning. This need for a specific AutoCAD textbook is what led us to write AutoCAD® for Interior Design and Space Planning.

The newly updated text, for AutoCAD 2004, is divided into four parts:

  • Part I: Preparing to Draw with AutoCAD (Chapters 1-3)
  • Part II: Two-Dimensional AutoCAD (Chapters 4-12)
  • Part III: Special Topics (Chapters 13-16)
  • Part IV: Three-Dimensional AutoCAD (Chapters 17-18)

This new edition includes many features designed to help the reader master AutoCAD 2004.

  • A Prompt/Response format leads the reader through each new AutoCAD command to prevent confusion and frustration.
  • Exercises are geared to architects, interior designers, and space planners, providing students the opportunity to work with real-world situations.
  • Chapters 2 and 3 are introductory chapters for using AutoCAD 2004. Material in Chapters 4 through 18 progresses from basic to the complex in a step-by-step learning process for users of AutoCAD 2004.
  • Over 500 figures (many printed to scale) support the text and reinforce the material.
  • Illustrations located in the margins help the user locate AutoCAD commands within the AutoCAD menus and toolbars.
  • "Tips," "Warnings," and "Notes" boxes in the text give students additional support and information.
  • Chapters 8 through 14 follow the graphic development of a design project called the Tenant Space project; each chapter contains step-by-step instructions for drawing each stage of the project.
  • Four other projects—obtained from designers presently working in the field—are included in the text as practice exercises.
  • Practice exercises in every chapter review the commands learned.
  • Learning objectives and review questions in every chapter reinforce the learning process.
  • An Instructor's Manual is available to support the text.

Most importantly, this text was written to help you, the reader, master the AutoCAD program, which will be a valuable tool in your professional career. We would like to thank the reviewers of the manuscript: Zane D. Curry, Ph.D., Texas Tech University and Christine Spangler, George Washington University We extend a special thank you to Stephanie Clemons and her students at Colorado State University for testing the manuscript in their classroom.

We would also like to acknowledge the following people, who contributed ideas and drawings: Mary Peyton, IALD, TES (Lighting Consultant), Roy Peyton, John Sample, Katherine Broadwell, Curran C.
