Platform for Display:PC|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
AutoCAD is the world standard in CAD programs, and if you are looking at this review, you likely already know that. With AutoCAD, you can create anything from simple drawings with lines and circles to complex schematics and layouts for entire projects. It is likely that the basic home user has no need for the complexities of AutoCAD, but if you have the need to look at DWG files created by others, this is a great option for opening and editing those files.
Note that the LT version has limitations compared to its fuller priced cousin in that it only handles 2D files and not the 3D ones.

Another reviewer made a comparison to Photoshop, and I think the comparison is quite apt. Initially you will be awed by the sheer volume of options and toolbars presented for you to use, and the opening screen can be initimidating to a CAD newbie. In fact, you can download a free trial from the AutoCAD website to see if it is for you. There are included sample drawings and layouts to get you started, and of course, a huge volume of material both printed and on the web to teach you the basics.

Depending on what version you are upgrading from, you may or may not see a huge difference in user experience. The new interface relies on Ribbons, similar to the new version of Microsoft Office. 2013 adds Cloud support to Autodesk 360 which is likely important in an collaborative environment. And of course, there is added support for social media sharing like Facebook and Twitter right within the program. Many other features that may appear new here were added in 2012 such as multi-touch UI support (for systems that support it).

Other nice new features include the section views in the documentation tab that allows for easier access when you need to edit section/detail lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's a reason why this is the CAD standard May 12, 2012
Platform for Display:PC|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My first experience with CAD software was with AutoCAD many years ago, but cost issues necessitated switching to other programs (mainly TurboCAD, but also CorelCAD). While these are capable tools and certainly offer a great value for the price, there is a reason why AutoCAD is considered by many to be the standard to which all other CAD programs are compared. It offers a huge array of tools, routines and capabilities that other programs just can't match. The downside is that this version (LT) is limited to 2D, and stepping up to the 3D version is a huge investment.

Even though it is priced much below the "full" version, AutoCAD LT still comes at a price, both monetary as well as the type of system required. I initially put it on a somewhat modestly configured dual core XP SP3 laptop with minimal graphics capability. It ran, but you could almost draw freehand faster than the screen could update. It also blue screened me a couple of times. I had a much better experience on a Win 7 machine (32 bit, i3 processor, 4GB RAM, 512MB video card). Reaction time was excellent, and zero problems to date with anything crashing.

I was initially displeased with the screen layout as it seemed way too cluttered compared with my past, albeit very dated, experience with AutoCAD. But after working with it for a while I found it to be efficient. It can also be customized with the tools used the most. The ribbon design works well. If you forget the name of a command you can start with the first letter or two and the software will provide suggestions.

I was concerned about being able to retrieve DWG files produced with older versions, but encountered no problems at all. Files came in without a hitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars AutoCad 2013 for less February 11, 2013
Platform for Display:PC|Verified Purchase
We use this product in our office for people who do not need full blown AutoCAD. It works very well and saves about 3000 dollars a seat. For the people we do purchase full blown AutoCAD we get them the Building design Suite which also comes with Revit.

I found that AutoCAD LT 2013 is a little faster and smoother than AutoCAD LT 2012. Amazon is currently selling this a good amount under what AutoDesk is selling it so that was a plus.

AutoCAD LT basically does not have LSP routines and 3d modelling, but for simple and efficient drafting it works great for under 1000 dollars a seat.

I would also like to say that 2013 introduces the new file format so now is the perfect time to buy so you do not need to convert files that come in from other architects/contractors. The upgrade is nice too for when AutoCAD LT 2016 comes out so you can get the new version for a lesser price.

1.0 out of 5 stars where is the support December 16, 2012
Platform for Display:PC
Autocad does not support their product. I called them on an install question after searching high and low for thrir number. I was told to call a reseller for support of Autocads product. I had a technical question and they refused to help me after i just purchased $5000 of their software. Autocad support sucks assuming you can find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very powerful 2D CAD program May 22, 2012
Platform for Display:PC|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
AutoCAD LT is the 2D version of AutoCAD. As a CAD newbie at this level I will admit there is a vast tool set and to use it in a production environment at a skilled level I think there is quite a learning curve. That said I was able to get it installed and registered easily. AutoDesk has emailed links to tutorials that have been beneficial in getting me going, that was a very welcome and business savvy move on their part. This has gotten me up and running quickly and productive on a basic level.

I found it easy to get going making basic shapes and from there to create more complex drawings. As for some of the more advanced tools I found the associative array functionality to be powerful and a great time saver. I was able to create multiple like objects quickly and move and edit them as a unit. It's easy to see how this would be a tremendous time saver for a working professional. The Sheet Set Manager is also a powerful item. I look at is as a database for projects, with it you can organize drawings in a project, edit the names, manage the views all on one palette. This was very handy for the handful of things I have created thus far, how much more so for the experienced professional.

Another feature I enjoyed is AutoCAD WS. The web/cloud baased collaboration offering from AutoDesk. I tried the iOS (iPad), Android (Tablet/phone), and web versions. All worked flawlessly. I was able to pull up, view, and edit my drawings. For my limited abilities, thus far, I was impressed with the number of tools available to me with these apps. The resolution was good on all the devices, though the phone was a bit small for my taste. The price for all the WS services is right...Free!

The PDF output was superb. It created high resolution images and the text is searchable.
