5.0 out of 5 stars Great gadget to own
This has come in very handy. I recommend it for anyone who has a car that has a check engine light that comes on. We had our car at the dealer and he told us the car showed 8 codes and needed approximately $800 worth of parts and labor. I bought the AutoXray CodeScout and checked the car myself and came up with 2 codes one being related to the O2 Sensor. I bought the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for reading generic codes only
Another reviewer said the dealer found 8 DTC codes but the CodeScout only showed 2. The MFR's website description (http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=92) says the CodeScout (only) reads and displays generic DTCs (not manufacturer specific DTC's). It will however erase both generic and manufacturer specific DTC's. So if you want to read custom DTC's for you...

We had our car at the dealer and he told us the car showed 8 codes and needed approximately $800 worth of parts and labor. I bought the AutoXray CodeScout and checked the car myself and came up with 2 codes one being related to the O2 Sensor. I bought the sensor for $60 and had a mechanic friend install it and then I reset the check engine light with my AutoXray CodeScout. The check engine light has not come on again and the car passed the emissions test with flying colors. So far I have saved almost $700 and I have loaned it to friends too who have also saved money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Investment, January 20, 2008
This review is from: AutoXray 700 CodeScout (Misc.)
I live in an emissions testing state (Georgia) and annually battle mysterious check engine lights on our two cars to pass the test. I bought the code reader because I wanted to stop paying ridiculous amounts of money to have others chase down minor problems. The reader is super easy to use, and after two months has helped me (who knows little about cars) self-diagnose and correct issues with both cars. Also, being able to erase pesky codes that remain after being fixed is a big plus.

This is a very useful tool that I think anybody could use.My sons service engine soon light was on and I knew what the problem was. we had unhooked the oxygen senser to fix a doughnut gasket leak and while we had the exhaust apart my son started the car to hear what it sounded like.well because we turned on the ignition with sensor unhooked ,, when we put it back together the service engine light stayed on. All I did was plugged in the autoXray 700. I just pushed the erase button and it turned out the light and it didn't come back on.it did read the correct code when it first diagnosed the problem. Very, very easy to use.

Anyone who is looking to save money should own one of these. Most of the engine lights are one for some type of simple emissions related code. This happens all the time for as loose gas cap or some other simple issue. The system tells you all the codes and the book explains what they are, you can then base you decision to take the car in for service on the problem. It costs less than 1 trip into the service station. It has already saved me over $300.00 on my auto's.

Thought I'd try the cheap model as I just needed to read a code and then reset the code. Worked fine on our Explorer and F150. Glad I bought it and not the more expensive models.

Bought it to check a code and it gave an accurate reading. I was able to narrow it down to a couple of things from the reading. Now, as I shop for service, I'm armed with this knowledge. It's an excellent protection mechanism and if you use it once, it'll likely pay itself off, especially if it's a minor fix you may even be able to do yourself.

I had an intermittent "service engine soon" light that was driving me nuts. At a $100 for a diagnostic check from the dealer to tell me I needed an oxygen sensor the cost of this tool was more than worth it and I could save more by doing the fix myself. I saved 50% on the diagnostic test alone.

What can I say. This dam thing works. I told me the problem I was having with the car. It was generic and I did use the internet for more help on the problem to make an exact fit, but I replaced the O2 sensor on the CAT, and the problem was fixed. The check engine light did not light up again. I also bought the O2 sensor on Amazon. Great price and fast delivery on both orders. Saved a ton of money on the repair. I do have to say replacing the O2 on the cat converter was hell. I recommed paying the money for the tool to take it out. It took me one and a half hours to remove it with a pipe wrench, but I got it out. Great product though. Use the internet thought the software to generic does not say much.

The fuel pump failed on my 2003 Ranger and shortly after having it replaced the "check engine" light came on. The cost to get the codes read 1 time was equal to the purchase of this tool. Ordered and received the tool witin a couple of days. Plugged it in turned on the key and read the codes (7) that were symptoms before the pump was replaced. Cleared the codes and have not registered a code since. The repair shop should have done this as part of the repair but since I live in CA "CARB" probably doesn't allow it. Great tool easy to use and for the cost of one reading I can check the codes any time I want. Well worth the money
