Biography

Ashlee Simpson is in a good place. She has two multi-platinum records that debuted back to back at the top of the charts, and collectively sold more than four million copies in the U.S. alone. She has two sold-out tours under her belt, a tight-knit family, a loyal fan base, and a burgeoning second career as an actress. So when it came time to create her third album, she wanted the music to… Read more in Amazon's Ashlee Simpson Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now…and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. More than others of her reality-show insta-star ilk, Ashlee Simpson's is an autobiography that shouts, "bring on the sequel." --Tammy La Gorce

1.0 out of 5 stars I Never Knew that I could Hate Someone so Much...., October 2, 2005
This review is from: Autobiography (Audio CD)
Well, she has acomplished a lot, as in nothing. Nowadays, a "musician" like Ashlee Simpson can take credit for writing songs that she didn;t write. And MTV is all like, she's so talented! she wrote this song all by herself! ..... I write my own music, along with all other real musicans who arn;t rich spoiled talentless little girls. She doesn;t even make her own lyrics, someone else does. It's so selfish, she takes all the credit just because she pays people to let her. sad. I don;t understand what the big deal is here, she can;t play an instrument... She can barely even sing... she can;t write her own lyrics... she can't write her own songs... she probably doesn;t even know what a note is. I'm sick and tierd of MTV and what they do.

Why I hate MTV...

1. They use bands and make them do what they want by putting them on this show.

2 They promote bad music, that really sucks, and everyone should hate... Oh ya! like Ashlee Simpson and Hillary Duff!

3. Everyone is always all like, oh! the TV says that this is good music! it must be good music! I'm going to go waste my money and buy this garbage because MTV told me too!

4. They are destroying music appreciation... To you those musicians out there who write songs for talentless worthless people like this, and get no credit, and watch those stupid people get rich and famous for them, I feel your pain. ( not really, but I bet I can tell how much you hate it)

5. Almost every worthless person that they put on this show seems to be famous the next day. why? just because they're on TV they're the kind of music people want to hear? sad.

6. Have you Noticed that all of these people don;t even play an instrument? it's laughable, they consider themselves, rockers, or whatever, and can;t even play guitar! They don;t even have real drummers usually! just a drum machine! They dont't even have a real bass! just a bass machine. Not that a vocalist isn't a musician, my all time favorite musician as well as my greatest inspiration is Jesse Micheals, he's a vocalist, but at least he writes his own lyrics! these cheap selfish pop stars are taking credit for music and lyrics that they didn;t even write.

What hope do we have when this system thrives? the answer is none. Soon people arn't even going to know who the Clash or Pink Floyd are. Only rappers like 50 cent, and rich spoiled little pathetic shards of people who are ruining the world. I wish that people would listen to the kind of music that they like to listen to, and explore new stuff, instead of buying whatever the media tells them too.

PEACE! rock on people who arn't posers! someday We'll beat them!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money...please read, January 7, 2005
This review is from: Autobiography (Audio CD)
I suggest you don't buy Ashlee Simpson's album for at least 3 reasons.

1. She is not an actual "artist" or "musician". She is just a corporate tool created by "the devil" (Viacom/MTV) just for one reason, money. The corporate eggheads created her so they can drain money from unsuspecting teenage girls. If you buy this, your just feeding money to corporations that don't deserve it.

2. She has no talent whatsoever. Her performance at the Orange Bowl has to be some of the worst singing I have ever heard and this is coming from someone who has heard at least 3 Yoko Ono albums all the way through. Her performance at Saturday Night Live was even more pitiful. What was up with that hoe-down at the end of the performance? Reminded me of Hee Haw. But then she comes up with tons of excuses for the incident, like blaming her back up band and having acid reflux disease. She could of just said "I have no talent". We all would of believed that.

3. There are so many struggling bands and musicians out there with real talent that are left ignored while talentless acts like Ashlee Simpson get all the attention and airplay from radio and MTV. She is just like Milli Vanilli, except Milli Vanilli could dance.

Don't waste your money on this trash.

Buy something with real talent like the following:
Johnny Cash
Led Zeppelin
David Bowie
Dead Kennedys
Jimi Hendrix
The Cure
Tom Petty
ZZ Top
Primus
Siouxsie & The Banshees
The White Stripes
Pearl Jam
The Beatles

Where do people come up with this garbage?

It is so obvious she's about as real an artist as her sister (rich & dumb Jessica Simpson-Lachey). The music is so vapid, phoney and devoid of any real content; the lyrics remind me of love notes scribbled on the back of a trapper keeper. I enjoy great, entertaining music like the next person - but this stuff just insults the intelligence.

Come on now? Why can't people get behind real artists, people with actual talent and interesting things to say? Not talking depth, but just plain reality? It's disheartening, one, that this is the kind of stuff the industry seems to always get behind - cash cow potential; but on the other hand, people buy up this rubbish? This seems to be one of the hoofprints of our culture: toss anything into the troth and we eat it up. Maybe it really doesn't matter in the end. Life is short, so who cares?

Yeah, who cares: buy more, buy now.
